How well has Wade Redden been playing down in the AHL? If a team were well under the cap ceiling, and wouldn't mind paying the $5M Redden is owed for each of the two years remaining on his deal, would they get a serviceable NHL defenseman, or is Redden at this point no longer NHL-caliber? I always liked the guy, so I hope that he'll get another chance in the NHL soon.
nty. i'd rather have him mentoring kids for the next two years than have his cap hit. his ahl numbers aren't good. i can't imagine what his nhl numbers would be, and at that he doesn't have the health to be blocking shot after shot in this league. we've got a few young kids with potential on d coming up, he could do the whole mentoring thing with them.

Whatever is remaining to be paid on his contract he's still a $6.5 mil cap hit and he still sucks. An old, slow non-physical defenseman. How much need is there for that?
If his cap hit was only 5 million, he'd never be in the running for worst contract ever. If you want to bite on 6.5 million dollars of ineffective play, then be my guest.
Redden is in limbo. If there is a lockout,the NHL won't allow him to report to the Whale and get paid his NHL salary. When the next CBA is struck,there will be a compliance buyout period. Craig Custance of ESPN and Arthur Staple of Newsday have reported there will be compliance buyouts in the next CBA. Redden will get paid some of the $10M remaining to him. Compliance buyouts were 2/3 paid out over the remaining term in the current CBA. Redden would get $6,666,667 over 2 years if the terms remain the same in the new CBA.

The NHL compliance/amnesty period was the week before the current CBA started. The NBA allows teams to use their 1 amnesty buyout in future years as long as the player was on their roster before the lockout. The NHL was different.

Absolutely. But the Rangers have deep pockets other teams don't have. They can afford to bury 6 mill in Hartford. A lot of teams simply can't do that....

There's 30 AHL teams, so I'm pretty sure every one of them has an NHL club running them.

Playing fine for the Whale but would be way too slow to play in the NHL. He's actually really valuable as far as being a great captain and leader for the young defensemen goes.

I've gained a new level of respect for Redden since he was assigned to the Whale, as he's obviously been a consummate professional since he's been there. You can say all you like about him doing the job he's paid for, the fact of the matter is there are plenty of former All-Stars whose egos are too fragile for them to do what he's doing so professionally.
Yeah, in theory. If it was like 3 million actual salary and a 6.5 cap hit I could see it happening for a team who doesn't care about winning and wants to spend the bare minimum.
But no team is dumb enough to piss away 5 million for nothing.

Really?--Asham is not the turkey that some people think he is.
Anyway if you only have one buyout why use it on a guy making $1 mil per. Better directing that somewhere else. Redden would be the obvious target--whether you're saving his cap hit by sending him to the minors or not. Too much wasted money--the summer cap issue and it's not exactly fair to the player--this is his get out of jail opportunity so we're going to hold on to him just to punish him some more? Anyway Redden is the one bad contract we still have left on the books. The sooner there is closure for everybody the better.

That's actually an interesting idea. I think he'd be a great coach. Pretty sure his family and him have grown to like the area. He's also one of the friendliest guys on the team as far as fan functions/meetups go.
But yeah, we've seen our share of former NHL players come to Hartford and none have handled it better. Sure, you can say it's easy because he's making millions, but money only helps your happiness so much. He's been great to have here.

I think you buy him out to retain as much off-season financial flexibility as possible. We don't know that the cap will be oing forward. Do we if the 10% summer overage allowance will be part of the new CBA? It's not something to have to worry about with new contracts due for McDonagh, Stepan and Hagelin next summer + any UFA additions you might wanna make.
It's funny to think how quickly he fell from grace. He was one of my favorite, if not my favorite non-Ranger D-men in the league.
I watched him pretty much his whole career and was against signing him--Redden had clearly slowed down the two seasons before he became a free agent. But, up until that point he was one of the better two way defenseman in the league.
