I am on a mini-French kick now.

I watched "The Samurai" the other day, and just received "Children of Paradise" in the mail. I am excited to check it out since it seems to have such a great rep.

sorry bud. Jonathan Richman knows that feel:

Well her jeans they get like a wet saddle blanket
And her boots are like you'd figure
And her car is full of hay
Horses, humans if she had to rank it

No tears shed over it. Was sceptical before the date but figured what the heck, might as well give it a go.

The date just affirmed my feelings of "How about - No"

the 50s is one of my favorite periods in french film. the new-wave (justifiably) gets the lion's share of the praise but i'm a big fan of Bresson, Melville, Clouzot and Becker. my short list for that period:

1950-Orpheus-Jean Cocteau
1953-The Earrings of Madame de…-Max Ophüls (rich people have affairs)
1953-The Wages of Fear-Henri-Georges Clouzot (the most suspenseful movie ever?)
1953-Thérèse Raquin-Marcel Carné (Children of Paradise director) (poor people have affairs)
1954-Diary of a Country Priest-Robert Bresson (great novel/great movie)
1954-Touchez pas au grisbi-Jacques Becker (hands off the loot!)
1955-Diabolique-Henri-Georges Clouzot (going to trade on the stereotype: the french Hitchcock)
1955-Rififi-Jules Dassin (great heist flick by blacklisted american director)
1956-A Man Escaped-Robert Bresson
1956-Bob le Flambeur-Jean-Pierre Melville
1958-Mon Oncle-Jacques Tati (hilarious, nearly wordless satire of technological advancement)
1959-Pickpocket-Robert Bresson (Bresson is a saint)
1960-Le Trou-Jacques Becker (one of the great prison-break movies)
