No risk signing. I'm surprised it took this long for him to be inked. Must have had a slew of teams interested.

He'll certainly get his shot in NJ. I hope he sticks, always liked him at UNH.

So will he be this year's Steve Bernier for NJ?

The Devils seem to do really well with these signings/acquisitions. I think it's a good move for both the Devils and Butler.

Tossed a lot of garbage out of here. Butler should be an NHL player, if you can't discuss that, head elsewhere.

Question, is this to compete in camp for Parise's spot? Or is he going to replace Sykora and the Devils try to find an impact winger on the trade market?

I liked Butler, but he came to camp out of shape and hid a groin injury from the team. If he can get some top 6 minutes he will do well. He just got passed by a couple prospects on Ottawa.

The guy has good hands, a good shot and showed really good anticipation/hockey sense back in 10-11. The word is last year he came to camp out of shape and he was never able to find his game after that. His skating is average at best, he's not a great passer, and he appears completely lost defensively most of the time. He's still young enough to get his head screwed on straight, and if he does I could see him finding a niche as a Michael Ryder type player, but if he's not scoring goals he's a total liability.

IMO what's really holding him back as a goal scorer is his lack of a one-timer. For a guy with soft hands and a great release, he sure flubbed a lot of setups from Spezza.

Count me as one Sens fan that didn't like us buying out Butler. I think he still has a shot at being a 20 goal, 60 point type player, especially with good linemates. I think this will come back to bite the Sens where they sit.

I never know what to think about reports like "he showed up out of shape at training camp" since I never know where those originate from.

The kid has a great shot but that's about it: he's decent offensively but pretty bad defensively.

It would be nice for him to stick in the NHL, but for Ottawa's sake I hope he isn't TOO sucessful

I'm sure Bernier can wear his own Devils' jersey. Butler is on a 2-way, he'll be happy to be in the press box imho.
