Predict Goal output next season

Here is something to tinker with during the August doldrums:

Predict our total goal production next season ( based on an 82 game season of course) with the current roster makeup. You can add a mystery fwd that gets signed before the season - but only if you name him correctly - as well... Otherwise the totals need to be put in MISC category.
Winner gets to stay 1 night for free at my Icelandic resort:

Fwds
Nash - 34
Gaborik - 23
Richards - 22
Callahan - 22
Kreider - *21
Stepan - 20
Hagelin - 15
Pyatt - 11
Boyle - 11
Rupp - 5
Halpern - 4
Asham - 4
MISC - AHL callups/minor trades /waiver claims/ camp tryouts - 6
Last missing Piece signed on fwd before season - ??? = Shane Doan - 14
Total fwd Goals - 198 + mystery missing piece - if any + 14 = 212

Defense
MDZ - 8
McD - 7
Staal - 6
Girardi - 5
Stralman - 5
Bickel - 1
Sauer/ trades/ callups / signings on D - 2
Total goals on D - 34

Total goals - 232 +14 mystery = 246 total goals
3,00 GPG for NYR
Which would be very nice with a Vezina winner in net. Believe we had 226 goals for last year. 187 against.

The only thing out insane with your predictions are that you have rupp scoring 5 goals.

Well he's out til December.

And he played brutal by his standards after coming back from his surgery in 10-11.

Knowing Gaborik, and talking with him, it's not impossible that he's back by the time of the home opener

It's so hard to get into individual players and predict the goal scoring that way. Callahan can score 30. Nash can score 40. Let's say they are both on Richards' line. If Nash scores 40, Callahan hasn't scored 30. If Callahan scored 30, chances are Nash hasn't scored 40. I'll just make a few general predictions about the team and a couple players.

1) Stepan continues to evolve into a top playmaker in the league. His linemates will project to score at a better pace than had they been playing with Stepan last year.

2) The Flower Play goes away. The Rangers field one of the top 10 units in the league. Del Zotto - Richards - Callahan - Gaborik - Nash turns out to be deadly. The second unit is still worthless and fans clamor for the days when John Mitchell ran the greatest 2nd PP unit in hockey history. I keed, I keed....

3) Gaborik plays 75% of the season, and scores over 30 goals.

4) Kreider hits 25. Why? Cause he's a friggin' beast.

5) Nash, Gaborik, and Kreider are put on 3 different lines; opposing defenses have a very difficult time matching up.

6) As so many athletes before him, Richards' 2nd year in the Big Apple is vastly improved over his first now that he's used to it. (see: Beltran, Carlos/Rodriguez, Alex/Jagr, Jaromir [03-04 to 05-06])

So where does this leave us? The Rangers have been remarkably consistent in GF/G the last 3 years. 2.67 in 2009-10, 2.73 in 2010-11, 2.71 in 2011-12. 2009-10 is significant because they added Gaborik and saw an increase of about .25 goals scored per game, and a 5% improvement in PP success. I believe the addition of Rick Nash + the improvement of the Rangers' young forwards will yield a slightly larger increase in GF/G than what we saw when Gaborik was injected into the lineup. The PP will improve to just about 10th in the league, which was 18.4 last year. I'm predicting a small increase in overall league offensive output this year... so let's say the Rangers will hit 19% PP efficiency.

2.71 GF/G (11th) ===> 3.09 GF/G (6th in NHL)
15.7 PP% (23rd) ===> 19.1 PP% (9th in NHL)

*a note about the PP. It's amazing they had even 7 teams underneath them considering how putrid their execution on the power play was. Take away the 6 games against the Flyers and their clueless defense/pathetic goaltending and it's even uglier. Just average execution on the PP should yield huge results.

My thoughts exactly. This however requires most of them to play to their full potential/ability. Which i believe (and hope) they will.

261 goals

I think that Girardi still has some growing to do Not a knock at all.

I think that this last PO's could have been a solid eye opener for him in the sense that he can be quite dangerous offensively.

I do not believe that 10 goals is out of the question for Girardi. Same goes for Staal.

Prior to the concussion, his point totals were rising each year. With a healthy off-season and the confidence of getting his game back in the PO's to where is was prior to the concussion, I can see a continued increase in his numbers.

Overall with a more improved top 6, I believe out top 4 are going to greatly benefit from that.

MDZ another year older I can see more goals from. Same with McDonagh. I can see both surpassing the 10 goal mark and both posting 40+ points as well.

If that is the case then the Rangers physician and medical staff should be fired on the spot.

Most reports have him coming back in mid November and maybe early December. Allowing him to come back over a month early would be doing a major disservice to not only the team, but the players as well as he will surely be risking re-injury to the same shoulder.

No need to rush him back or allow him to talk his way into the line-up.

There were 7 teams worse, but none of them operated nearly as horribly as ours did, it's true. It's quite sad how bad it was.

Nash will score 40+

McDonough will be our higest scoring defensemen as he will begin to see a little more PP time this year and will start carrying the puck even more.

Kreider, Hagelin, Boyle, and Pyatt will all score between 15 and 20. Kreider's low total based on ice time. I see him being held back by Torts until he masters other responsibilities. Pyatt and Boyle will surprise with nice 15+ goal seasons

Straalman might be good for 10-25-35 with regular playing time

If we can get 15 goals from Rupp, Asham, Halpern combined I'll sign for that now

I don't know what to make of Stepan and Richards in terms of goals. Depending on who plays with who and how quick Gabby comes back I can envision something like 20-50-70 for Richards and 18-35-53 for stepan.

I see Callahan scoring a few less than he did last season
