More expensive future: John Carlson vs. Pernell Karl Subban

Both players are top-pairing D-men (I believe Carlson is a #2 or a #1, while Subban is the Habs' #1 since he played his first playoff game), are RFAs, and come off their ELCs. Who will have the more expensive future?

Agreed, but I can see Montreal paying PK a ton more than what Washington will pay for Alzner

If Carlson negotiates after Subban is signed, he can use Subban as a comparable and be paid similar money so I'd say that it is close in all honesty.

I'm not exactly sure how someone can claim one player to be better than the other at this point.

Sure, Subban shows much more flash, but the two have been on similar tracks-- neither has "broken out" just yet, but both have been playing similar roles for their teams for the past two years and been virtually neck and neck as far as development goes.

Caps fans like to say Carlson is better defensively, and Habs fans like to say Subban is better offensively. The reality is that neither is true. Both players are about as similar as it gets as far as on ice results go.

That said-- Montreal needs Subban much more than Washington needs Carlson. Therefor, Subban will be paid more in his career provided neither of them is traded.

There are certainly two extremes when it comes to Subban. Those who believe him to already be a franchise defender and a future perennial Norris candidate, and those who believe him to be a defensive liability and nothing more than a solid #3 who shouldnt be trusted in a top pairing role.

So believe it or not, it is possible for a player to be both overrated and underrated. Subban happens to be one of those players.

I completely agree with this. In this case I believe he is overrated by his own fan base and underrated by some other fan bases. Like you said, Hab fans already see him as a superstar in this league and I guess they've seen enough of him to make this argument. But even though I haven't watched him play near as much as Montreal fans I've still seen enough of him to know he has alot to work on with his game before he becomes considered one of the best in the league. He's still young so he has plenty of time to work on those aspects of his game and I think he has a good chance at reaching his potential if he keeps his head on straight.

With regards to the poll I agree with other posters ahead of me who said that Carlson will be just as good or better than PK but Subban will demand more money and he will receive it in order for the Canadiens to keep him in Montreal.
