It surprised me to see how many of you are right around my age. 20, going into 4th year of political science at u of a, already accepted to law here for the year after that! Any of you go to highschool in Calgary? I went to Aberhart. Wonder if we secretly know eachother.
As for what I do, during the school year I work as a tv salesman at future shop. During summer, I do labor jobs (last year at a refinery, this year a gravel pit). This way I never have to take out student loans and always have some money left over.
I'm happy i could help because Instrumentation is a great field but is not properly displayed like some fields like electricity, alot of time when you say your going in instrumentation people will ask questions like what's that or what instrument do you play but I will tell you this i highly recommend the field. The thing i like the most about it is the fact that you will rarely ever be doing the same thing so you dont fall into routines which is something i love about this field

In all seriousness, I've applied to the RCMP and am inching ever so close to being hired as a Regular Member.
No interest in being a pilot? I think I heard somewhere the airlines will be hiring half a million pilots worldwide over the next 20 years.
I've always wanted to be a pilot. Still not giving up the dream.
To be honest, I'll believe in a pilot shortage when I see it. There's been a rumor of one for the past 40 years, and it never seems to happen. The truth is, the pilot market in Canada is beyond saturated. As a result, pilots have to endure extremely poor pay and working conditions for the first 10-15 years of their career. I want to have a family, and I refuse to tell little johnny he can't play hockey this year because daddy just took another pay cut or got laid off.
Case in point, my starting salary with Nav Canada as ATC is triple what I made in my best year as a flight instructor.
It's a long and daunting road, with lots of ups and downs. The industry sometimes comes to a complete standstill and there's no upward movement for years at a time.
The advice I give aspiring pilots is basically this:
You need to want to fly more than anything in the world. It needs to be the driving force in your life. More than family, pay, benefits, stability, lifestyle, and living location. If you can honestly say to yourself that yes, 10 years from now I will be happy because I am in an airplane, then it's probably for you. And if you can get beyond the drawbacks, it's an amazing career - just go in with your eyes open.

This thread explains a lot. Lot's of youthful exuberance. Also explains the dramatic difference of perspective on the team and its future. It just hit me that most of you weren't born when the Flames won the Stanley Cup. You all missed some great days when Alberta was the Death Valley of the NHL.
I'm like MarkGio and like my privacy but will say I'm older than almost any three of you put together, which makes me feel ancient! I'm a part-time professor of psychology for a small school and consult during off terms. With age comes experience and with experience comes the desire of others to use it to their advantage. Just wish the economy was better! Nice to see so many SAIT students and grads in the membership as well. I used to hang a shingle out there. They ever get the renovations and expansion off the administration completed? The architecturals were very interesting and I always wondered how it would look finished up.

Well...if you have an engineering degree, an accounting designation, or a chemistry degree right now you're laughing. The oil biz cannot get enough of you. If you have public relations, economics or statistics then you (like me) are competing with the recently released staff from the Fed gov't. And it is really hard to compete for jobs with someone with 2 Master's and 10+ years experience.
So, yeah, Alberta has loads and loads of jobs and this is a great time to be graduating, but only if you're graduating from the right program.
