Somehow his name doesn't sound like a hockey players name at all to me.

But low risk signing.

That's basically how I'd see the lines put together.
But, the good thing is that the 5 of them (not really Clarkson) are pretty interchangeable.
They've all shown a pretty good ability to work well as linemates.

Basically a younger version of Sykora for the Devils.
Sykora was all shot and not much else. If he can skate faster than Sykora, he should be fine.

Guess this means Sykora won't be re-signed?

I don't know. I mean, if you can get Sykora for ~$2M or less (which the Devils should be able to do), I'd re-sign him either way. You never know if Tedenby or Butler don't work the way the Devils want them to. Sykora had the best season of the three last year and he can be had for very cheap, although he's deserving of a raise from the near-minimum he made last year. The Devils have more than enough cap space though, so a one-year contract for Sykora isn't out of the question. It's hard not to re-sign the guy (worked hard for a good year last year and has always had chemistry with Elias), especially considering, IMO, it's New Jersey or nowhere else for him at this point of his career.

our beat writer Tom Gulitti reported today in his blog

Lamoriello said he is still interested in re-signing unrestricted free agent forward Petr Sykora, but there is nothing new to report.

been saying this for weeks though. seems like there's some type of holdup just I have no idea for what.

Good for him, I always liked him. I think he'll get a real good chance with NJ and wind up one of the highest producing players per dollar.

He was so touted out of College, maybe a change of scenery will help. Devils have done well with low risk high reward signings.

butler and tedenby won't both make the team, imo. it will be one or the other.

both of them on the same line would make me feel truly sorry for josefson stuck between them. plus neither is really a forechecker and deboer likes to keep one of those on each line.

this is the lineup right now, imo.

kovy-zajac-zubrus
elias-henrique-?
tedenby/butler-josefson-clarkson
carter-gionta-bernier

Bernier was a good reclamation project for new jersey hopefully Butler can find some success as well.

I don't see Butler as an effective 3rd liner so I would hope NJ fans avoid painting him there. Had he that kind of game I suspect Ottawa would have kept him.

I think he lacks the size and strength to play an effective grinding/checking role in the NHL. He has 2nd line winger potential which is what I think NJ is hoping for.

He either comes into camp (whenever that is) in top shape and ready to compete for 2nd line minutes or he gets into shape playing in the AHL and waits for an injury or trade to open a spot up for him

And even if he doesn't they're really not risking anything.

New Jersey didn't have a typical "third line" for much of last season and I don't think they plan on filling it with grinders next season either. Butler should be afforded plenty of opportunities with guys like Josefson and Clarkson on his line.

good for Bobby.

hope he comes into camp at 100% and in 100% shape...kid has hands and a shot that the Devils could use.

I think he finds a nice role with this team and surprises some folks. great signing by the Devils to get a low risk/low cost player like Butler who could reap rewards of 20 plus goals if in the right situation.

Nice pick-up for the Devils. I always thought he'd develop into a better player than what he showed this last season in OTT. No risk here. Good work.

Butler will not play left wing, he is a right shot RW'er. The depth at RW in the NHL is at an all time low, there is a very good chance he is used with Zajac/Kovalchuk..If Elias was to play center next year with Henrique on LW then that line may work as well.

I project lines as

Kovalchuk/Zajac/Zubrus
Elias/Henrique/Sykora
Butler/Josefson/Clarkson
Carter/Gionta/Bernier

First line is cause Zajac is one of best 2 way centers in league, he can make up for when Kovy has his occasional lapses.

Second line, Sykora only succeeds under certain conditions, namely, Patrik Elias. I think Sykora will play 60 games with Tedenby getting other 22.

3rd line and 4th line don't need much explanation

Probably the second one. Who could replace Parise on his own? Expecting him to do that would be unfair. The way we'll replace Parise's production is by having several guys step up, Butler would just be one of them, along with improvements from Josefson and Henrique, the entire fourth line, and Tedenby sticking. I don't think this rules out Sykora being re-signed either, honestly.

Offensively, perhaps. Defensively, it would be an adventure, because the only one I really trust in his own zone is Henrique.

Definitely needed this pickup.

The defensive logjam is still there though, so the Devils will make at least one more move before the season starts.

There is no way Adam Larsson or Henrik Tallinder is going to get benched for the majority of the season.
