You're hilarious.

That being said, I'd wager that his 2010-11 success is more directly attributed to playing with Spezza than anything else (if thjat's actually what you're getting at, and not just Spezza-bashing). As soon as he was moved off Spez's line, he looked like half the player he had been. I think his success in the NHL was a product of being in the right place at the right time: a Sens team that was so bad they sold off most of their aging talent and were desperate for pretty much any warm bodies who could skate and had a pulse (see: Marek Svatos, Francis Lessard, etc...). Butler was the best of the influx of guys who came in after the season was lost, but couldn;t duplicate the results when there was other talent actually competing against him for ice time.

Just my perspective, though. Like I said before, he's got enough skill to stay up in the NHL as a offensive specialist if he finds the right motivation.

Uhh...why? Sykora had to fight for a spot last offseason to prove he can still play in the NHL, WHICH HE DID.

Why should Sykie have to go through THAT again? It hardly sounds fair, IMO.

I've been saying the same thing about Sykora. He was signed to a 1 year deal after earning that spot out of camp. At his age and the fact that he was sat in the playoffs, what out of that makes you think he just gets a spot this year? I would think Sykora will be given the opportunity to earn a spot again this year but sit some select games to help keep his energy up.

That being said, I think he'll be fighting with our most recent signing in training camp.

I understand what you're saying but after 21 goals last regular season, one would think he's earned one more year here. UNLESS.....he was asking for too much money to re-sign. <----Another possibility as to why he wasn't re-signed as of yet.

Whoever said it's either Tedenby or Butler that makes the roster, not both, had it right. And I'd put my money on Teddy. Really think he'll surprise some people this year. 15-18 goals and only being half of a defensive liability.

My guess is Sykora gets signed...we roll into camp with what we got. One of Tedenby/Butler makes it and Lou makes moves later in the yr if needed.

I'm pretty pumped to see what a healthy Zidlicky can do in a full season under PD.

We all saw last year how Lou is at his best when he makes those under the radar low key signings and trades (i.e Ponikarovksy, Sykora, Carter, Bernier, and to an extent Foster). Let's hope Butler surprises and either Sykora and/or a camp invite impress.

Signing Sykora would be nice. Added depth thanks to Butler. I just donno why he hasn't signed him yet.

I've been saying this for a while now, but think he might need to re-earn his place on the Devils.
Sure, he came up with 21 goals for the club.. and that was both welcome and more than asked of him.

That being said, the strain of top-6 minutes, facing heavy competition, playing 82 games and heading deep into the playoffs took an honest toll on him.
Towards the end of the season, he was frequently benched during the 3rd period and by the time playoffs rolled around... he wound up as a healthy scratch.

Considering how short of a summer it is for him, it might be necessary to prove that he still has gas left in the tank. Because he was running on fumes before the season even ended.

I may very well be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

My perfect world scenario is to re-sign him, though.
Split time on the 3rd line 60/40 with Tedenby.

Especially because the salary probably isn't that onerous. If he sucks, stuff him in the AHL and no harm done.

I think he must be exploring the possibility of a defenceman for forward trade. I wonder who his target is.

I think when you factor in injuries there's a good chance we'll see both of them this year. Part of the reason I'm happy with this is because I would rather have Tedenby+Butler over Tedenby+random AHLer if someone goes down.

Tedenby and Butler potentially on the same line scares the living hell out of me. Defensive black hole.

Butler's defensive game is being way, way overblown.

Let's see what happens when he plays a few games before we start calling him a "Defensive Black Hole".

At the very worst, Butler sounds like a younger version of Sykora.

If that's the case, and he proves himself worthy of being in the lineup, I wouldn't be afraid to see Elias-Henrique-Butler

Two defensively responsible players-- and with Elias on the same line, he'd probably be able to pick up his goal total for certain.

Edit to add:
potential lineup in this scenario

Kovalchuk-Zajac-Zubrus
Elias-Henrique-Butler
Tedenby-Josefson-Clarkson
Carter-Gionta-Bernier

I didn't call him a black hole defensively. I called a line with him and Tedenby on it a defensive black hole. Tedenby IS a defensive black hole, and Butler isn't good defensively. That's not a good combination even if you have a defensively responsible center.

Like I said, I don't have a problem with the acquisition. Low risk for sure. I just don't want him playing with Tedenby unless Boo has learned something in Albany.

well i did stipulate that he would have to play with kovalchuk

the chances of that are slim but if he happened to do it i would be willing to wager he does out-produce zach and the chances of zach getting injured or just the wild sucking are actually not out of the question

so overall if butler is with kovy and zajac/henrique then maybe he gets 20-30-50 and parise with koivu just sucks a bag of dicks

I have no clue how good Butler really is defensively, but the way everyone is talking, I'm not sure he would be able to earn that spot. I mean If DeBoer or Lou were going to give a rookie who is sub-par defensively the chance to play in the top-6, I'd think Tedenby would have already been put in a similar situation. I don't see Butler being in the Top-6 unless there is an injury or he plays exceptionally.

Parise will put up more points than Butler. Seriously. That's total, complete and utter bitterness on your part to believe the opposite.

The only way that doesn't happen is if Zach gets injured and is out the majority of the season.
