EDM fans just let out all sorts of hatred for his lazy play and lack of desire on the ice.

If he signs with PHI to fill a gap, I think their would be huge pressure on him and he would do even worse than in EDM.... I mean if you cant crack the defensive roster for EDM than somethings up......

I guess a tryout would be fine but I don't think its even worth the call.

Let's offer sheet PK Subban. Makes sense since he came out and said he wouldn't entertain any.

Actually, I agree with you, just saying in an outright emergency he's played there before. I don't think anyone, including him wants to see him on D during a game though, too much risk for a 36-year-old enforcer who's a 4th line winger. I like him at wing but he can't be a D.

PK Subban is poisonous in the locker-room and has fought his teammates on more than 1 occasion in practice. Don't want him.

Going after a RFA at this point would be fruitless. Montreal and Washington will instantly match any offersheet to Subban or Carlson.

Trading young talent for a veteren defensmen wouldn't be a terrible idea. It just depends on who they're trading/who they're getting. The only player on the starting roster that I'd be willing to trade is Read. Anyone in the minors is fair game IMO.

Standing pat is the easiest solution. See what Manning, Bourdon, and Gustafsson can do with more icetime.
If it's a 1 year deal, considering our cap space, where's the risk?

I was hoping Gervais could be a decent 5th/6th defenseman with Gustafsson as his partner, but I asked NYI fans and they seem to think he is quite bad. Perhaps he isn't quite as bad as he sounds and he just got chosen as a whipping boy?

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1244121

I wouldn't hate the idea of Bourdon and Gustafsson getting a shot at the same time, but I'd be afraid of the team taking that shot and the better remaining FA defenseman, Roszival and Hannan, having already been snatched up.

We don't play defense anyway and i have been saying for a while it doesnt matter who we get on D as long we keep pinching every play our D will always be bad. We are built to score goals not defend them.

lol good stuff. still unsure of what was going in Homers head when he inked Lilja for another year or when he gave shelley 3 yrs. Other than that he has been a good gm.

I think we might see Matt Walker play, too, or at least get a shot in camp. Last time he played in the NHL, he was a decent 6th D imo, the main problem was the cap hit, but now, we can easily afford it. He's better than Lilja and Gervais I think. Would have to see him again, though.

Coburn - Timonen
Schenn - Grossmann
Bourdon - Walker
Gervais - Gustafsson
Lilja - Syvret
Manning

At least we have depth. 11 capable NHL defenders.

Syvret and Walker? lol what? I would give Lauridson a shot over them too. Unless you get one of those RFA's they wont be much of an a 3rd Pairing of Gervais/Lilja/Bourdon/Gus

I wonder what we'd give up for Bouwmeester. He seems like one of those players who would be traded for cheaper than you'd expect.

Hopefully we could give a 1st+a prospect (not Laughton, Cousins, Ghost, etc.) for him. Anything that involves a roster forward is a no go for me.

Bouwmeester-Timonen
Coburn-Grossman
Schenn-Gustafsson/MAB

That doesnt look bad at all. Then with Meszaros back it could look quite good.

Syvret is on the bottom of the list, too, like if we have 3-4 injuries, he can be a good call-up. He's not a NHL regular for sure, but a capable guy to help when needed. Walker is a 6th D for sure (unless injuries killed him), he has already shown it, I don't see why we wouldn't let him get a shot at the camp. People on here hate him a lot because of his cap hit and the Gagne trade, but he isn't as bad as some think.

If the rumors are true, we aren't the only ones involved, so we would probably have to pay a lot. Calgary could also just decide to keep him. They need a 2nd line center; we won't give them a 2nd line center, see what I mean. I don't think we have a good shot at getting him.

I think the best thing for the Flyers to do is see what they have with the current group that's there. I know the popular thing is to rip on the D, but at the same time, let's see how the young guys respond to increased responsibilities and see how the rest of the veterans will mentor the younger guys. I don't think the d is all doom and gloom that it's being made out to be. Would a true number one defender help? Of course it would. But at the cost it would take to acquire one, the team would be left with even more holes than it has. Right now, the best thing to do is just stay the course and in a worst case scenario, see about a stop gap like Roszival or Hannan.

I voted to sign a UFA but the more I think about it the more i think the flyers should just stick with what they've got. I don't think they'll be making a deep run with the current d-corp but thats ok. If they slip a little they'll just be in a better draft position for a deep draft.

If the Flyers are completely out of it come the deadline (which I doubt) they could even ship off kimmo/Hartnell back to Nashville or something for picks and re-sign them in the summer assuming they aren't re-signed before then.

my point is i think the flyers would be wise to be patient with this group, which sadly is not something they are know for.
