I honestly thought that this was going to be a suggestion thread about how you thought BMX should be an Olympic sport, to which I was going to come in to say that it was a bad idea.
.... needless to say, I'm a tad bit surprised to find to find out it already is an Olympic sport....
BMX in the Olympics is cool with me especially since it is actually racing and not judged freestyle (half pipe, street, etc.) events. I find the racing entertaining and a lot of fun to watch and as impressive as the freestyle stuff is the fact that is judged will always leave me sort of 'meh' towards it.
Probably for no other reason than my own ignorance I would have never guessed that Latvia is a 'power house' in it... What's the deal with that? Is there a reasonably large following for the sport there?

Not really. Their best riders live and train in California. Like with a lot of the sports Latvians have been excelling at lately, they only have a small core of athletes that simply train hard to achieve something, although the attention they bring to the sports inevitably increases participation and interest in them tenfold. This happened with BMX, Tennis, Skeleton, Beach Volleyball, hockey, etc once they started getting results internationally. Other than hockey, none of those had much of a following there even 5-6 years ago.
