Prospect poll, 2012: #15

By a whisker, Chris Calnan edges out the competition for #14, including the guy drafted ahead of him. The coming years could show how much "live scouting" matters over raw opinion. Who will reign supreme, the Hawks scouts or the HF board posters?

The guy is an absolute physical beast, though. I personally think he'll shoot up the rankings in the coming years and have way higher hopes for him than for Fournier.

Chris Calnan

#1: Brandon Saad, LW (81.82%)
#2: Teuvo Teravainen, LW/C (59.62%)
#3: Mark McNeill, C (48.00%)
#4: Jeremy Morin, LW (36.84%)
#5: Dylan Olsen, D (40.74%)
#6: Phillip Danault, C (44.12%)
#7: Brandon Pirri, C (41.86%)
#8: Kyle Beach, LW (30.19%)
#9: Adam Clendening, D (43.75%)
#10: Stephen Johns, D (27.78%)
#11: Kevin Hayes, RW (50.00%)
#12: Jimmy Hayes, RW (55.17%)
#13: Ben Smith, RW/LW (28.57%)
#14: Chris Calnan, RW (22.58%)

On to #15. Competition is still wide open.

Dahlbeck. Honestly haven't seen much of Fournier.

... I thought he was focusing on the defensive side of his game.. His penalty minutes were up, and his points were down..

I like his mobility and the fact that he has an edge to him. I suppose he had a down year, especially point wise, but I think he will bounce back..

Went with Klas

Already has proven success vs professional talent and has safe potential longterm to have some role as a NHL dman

Voted Holl, Shalunov has looked good in the CAN/RUS challenge though.

We have ten prospects that are generally considered more promising than he is.

if you know more, let us know. We haven't heard much about our WHL prospects in general.
Have you seen more of him in the last years? give us a scouting report

I can see Calnan, but Whitney is just getting ridiculous.

This guy wasnt even a full time starter last year, and got lit up in the playoffs. (5.49gaa 0.831sv%)

In fairness to Whintey, nobody knows how Victoriaville played throughout the year or in the playoffs defensively. I could see Whitney being voted in the top-15 simply because of his rare blend of outstanding size (6'5") and great athleticism. I can't remember who/where, but I remember reading/hearing Pekka Rinne comparisons for him and, after all, he was the #2 ranked N.A goaltender in the draft.

For me though, considering I just realized Holl hasn't been voted in yet, it's Holl again.

Whitney has size, agility and skill and that got him ranked as the #2 goalie in North America. It's not about about what he did last year - but what he might do in 3 or 4 years.

This is a close one. I think I'll take Fournier here over Holl and Whitney.

Whitney is a big project all though I love the pick. But you really can't trust goalies even when they are dominant in junior and he hasn't been yet. They are so unreliable and unpredictable that I can't justify picking one before two 2nd rounders. Just look, our 2nd rounder two years ago has had his stock fall in Kent Simpson.

Fournier has decent size and is a good skater. He also has some solid skills as well. Not a big fan of Holl. He is like the #4 defenseman on Minnesota so ... not very promising. Not great offensively or defensively. He really needs to have a breakout year otherwise I fear it is another wasted 2nd rounder(ie Ludvig Rensfeldt). Fournier looks to at least have high offensive potential.

I've seen him the last 3 years and during those years he was one of the main reasons why Everett made the playoffs and made a bigger impact than Ryan Murray. The best part of his game is consistency and that is why the coach played him majority of the games and was the reason why the Silvertips were almost in every game.

He has great size and uses it very well cutting off the angle is his biggest strength considering itnwasnone of the areas he needed to work on during his draft year. He doesn't really excel in anything, but doesn't have a huge weakness shooters can expose. He is also a perfect hybrid between blocking and athletic style goalers, picture between Reimer and Cam Ward.

The last few season there is no doubt in my mind he was of the top 3 goalers in the WHL. Just don't be surprised if he has a very solid training camp.

Yea, in the first prospect poll I voted for him just based on his name but decided to get some info about him. Read he had pretty good size and was relatively athletic. Would be pretty cool if he had a good camp and turned some heads. We could use some hope for the future of the position if crawford doesn't bounce back.

I would personally have him over Beach. The thing is he is a perfect blend between blocking and athletic which makes him very hard to beat one v one.

Crawford is one of the best in the league 1v1, but it didn't translate to much overall success last season
