Even if Brunette or Holmstrom are good defensively they are way to slow. I dont recall Arnott ever being good defensively either. He can win faceoffs but that doesnt make you a good defensive player.

Best options: Moore, Sykora, Sturm, Pandolfo and Madden.

Moore is the only viable non-damaged option left it seems unless NHL teams grow a pair and take a chance on a good two-way fwd playing in the SM-Liiga or something.

Arnott in fairness was a lot better as a 2-way player on STL than he was on Nsh. I'm surprised they brought back Langenbrunner but not Arnott.

I thought Moore was taking the year off because of his wife's illness?

Awards:
Hecht. Granted, he's probably no longer a viable NHLer after his latest series of concussions that cost him most of last season.

Beyond him, Moore's probably it.

He's always been a pretty solid two way guy. It's his offensive game that concerns me.

I think it's cognitive dissonance because you know Vancouver has been in talks with Arnott and he could be signing there. He's not as good defensively as some of the other options, but the pool is pretty shallow so I don't know if there's any better two-way options available.

I want to vote Moore for this thread, but like others have said it's hard to consider him an available UFA given what's going on in his personal life. I hope the best for him, I have a soft spot for journeyman players like him.

tbh, Hecht if he could stay healthy for a full season. He's a good player to have. Can flip between C and LW, can play in the top 6 in a pinch if someone gets hurt. Only trouble is his concussion/general health history over the last few years...

Moore too, but idk how much he's even considering any offers with his wife... iirc, he's said he's looking for some long-term stability if/when he signs, so I imagine it only happens if he gets 2-3 years from someone, maybe with a limited NTC.

Yea don't see that happening. He's already made more than enough to cover that.

That's a bit of a stretch. I only put on my rose coloured glasses AFTER they're officially a member of my team

Arnott in fairness was a lot better as a 2-way player on STL than he was on Nsh. I'm surprised they brought back Langenbrunner but not Arnott.
They re-signed Langenbrunner and didn't re-sign Arnott because they didn't want him anymore. It's been rumored he and Hitchcock didn't get along. Supposedly, Arnott also gave trouble coming back from injury and being sat, something he didn't like but it was the choice because he was supposedly hurting the team. In short, and not just in St. Louis, there have been rumors for years that Arnott has been in the middle of problems and conflict within the locker rooms and maybe even with other coaches he's played for. I know that was definitely a concern in Nashville years ago. I've heard things like he divided the Predators' locker room when he was captain there. It shouldn't be a secret anymore that Arnott's not exactly regarded as a good team guy and it's been that way for a while from what I've heard.

As for the best defensive forward, probably Moore. Hecht is too much of a question mark to judge right now. Dvorak might be up there I suppose; he played a checking line role last year in Dallas which has always been his niche throughout his career. Arnott, no way. He's big, can win some faceoffs, can provide some veteran experience and leadership, and he still has an offensive game and can help a team's PP, but the last thing you should expect from him is a solid defensive game. He's never been a highly-regarded two-way player and he's only getting older and slower. I like him, but he shouldn't be relied on for defense.

I'd also say Madden is still up there now, but that's not saying too much other than how little is left. I love Madden and wish he still plays but again, like Arnott, age is a factor. He's primarily a PK and faceoff specialist at this point, but a way better defensive option than Arnott is. I just don't know how much Madden has left. Arnott I think can definitely still play. It took Madden months to sign with the Panthers last year. At this point a year later, I'd expect the same thing for him this year; he'll likely have to wait again.

Its Doan and it's not even close. But he's hardly a UFA until Jamison backs out.
