Week of August 7th-12th - Sunday Papers

Sunday, August 12th Jets, CBA and AHL IceCaps news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Stay, Jets, stay – Bars. A potential lockout will impact more than just the NHL and its players. There are tons of businesses that rely on the game to make money.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets sign U.S. prospect scout. His primary area will be the USHL, which has become a very good avenue for producing American NHL talent.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

Winnipeg Sun: IceCaps coming home in case of lockout? We’ll see. As much as folks in the Peg’ would want to see hockey of any sort if there was a lockout, you can’t imagine it would be fair to season ticket holders in St. John’s to usurp their team.

CBA news:

USA Today: NHL-KHL games possible if there’s a lockout. While this might be interesting for a game or two, most fans want their NHL hockey teams playing in their city, not this alternative.

Detroit Free Press: Shanahan’s rulings play a role in CBA discussions. Wonder what method the players would prefer?

Ottawa Sun: Negotiations set to be front page news. So is the battle between the players and owners or between the owners and owners?

New York Post: Bettman playing dirty. It appears that opinion is turning on the NHL after their initial offer asked for the sky and the moon.

ESPN: Bobby Orr sides with players. Since he now enjoys the role of player agent, it is somewhat unsurprising that he is in favour of the players.

Winnipeg Free Press: The NHL labour history. Ed Tait takes you through the long and sordid history of NHL labour relations.

NHL news:

Comcast Philadelphia: Hasek training for return. A 47 year old goalie who wants a multi-year deal. Does the Dominator still have the stuff to dominate in the NHL?

Globe and Mail: Former Blackhawks goaltender Cristobal Huet forgoes return to NHL. There was a lot of speculation that he might be coming back to the NHL, but he has signed in the Swiss elite league.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, August 7th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

ESPN: The next steps for NHL realignment. There has been a ton of debate as to where the Jets should end up but until the league resolves the Coyotes situation, no determinations can be made. (To read full article you must be an ESPN insider).

NBC Sports: Jets offseason report. Just a quick rehash of the moves the Jets have made this summer.

NBC Sports: Jets take a leap of faith with Ondrej Pavelec. Can the coaching staff get the talented goalie playing consistent hockey next season? We shall see.

NBC Sports: Winnipeg inherited a franchise that never got going. Despite having a very loyal following amongst fans in Atlanta, the ownership was clearly not interested in making this team a cornerstone of their operations.

NBC Sports: Jets need Evander Kane to take another step forward. There is no question that the Jets will need Kane to take a big leap forward next season if they hope to compete with the other Southeast division teams.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Fehr says still sufficient time to get NHL deal done. Fehr keeps floating the idea that the parties can play past the September 15th deadline for the current CBA. However, his role in the 94′ baseball strike is well known by the NHL and you can bet that there is zero chance they will allow this to stretch past the mid September deadline without some sort of resolution.

NESN: Shawn Thornton isn’t worried about CBA negotiations (video). Hosting his 3rd annual golf tournament, he and teammate Daniel “what am I gonna do with all this paella” Paille offered some thoughts on the current state of affairs.

NHL news:

New York Post: Devils owner short, needs $20M more. Well it seems that the Yotes potential owner is also short 20 million. Perhaps they could flip a coin and buy one of these franchises.

Phoenix Business Journal: Doan’s short list. According to reports his list is down to just 3 teams.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, August 8th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

The Hockey News: 2012-13 - No. 14. Appears that the Hockey News are not too impressed by the off season moves of True North. They are predicting a 14th place finish for your Jets next season. Agree, disagree? Let us know where you think the Jets will finish next season.

The Barrie Advance: Jets stars join HNIB. Barrie is quite the pipeline for Jets talent.

Hockey's Futures: Mark Scheifele still top prospect in system. The good folks over at Hockey's Futures give a breakdown of the Top 20 prospects in the system.

Jets official site: Ready Redmond. Eager to make the jump to the NHL, will Redmond be able to crack the lineup or will he be spending another season of seasoning with the IceCaps?

CBA news:

NHL.com: NHL, NHLPA reconvene CBA negotiations. Appears that the Jets Ron Hainsey, the team rep, was involved in the process today.

Newsday: Both sides agree there is enough time for a new CBA. Good thing that the two sides can agree on the fact that there is still time to get a deal done, now how about spending time agreeing on the actual issues.

NHL news:

CSN Chicago: Will ad logos be placed on NHL sweaters? Hate this idea. There are plenty of ways to generate revenue. Best to leave some things alone.

New York Daily News: Rangers a favorite to land Shane Doan. It appears the team favoured to get Doan changes every single day. Yesterday I read that the Sharks were in the lead. Who knows who it will be tomorrow.

USA Today: Trotz says Predators are on Doan’s short list. Looks like that short list, isn’t quite as short as we thought it was if the Preds are indeed on it.

Edmonton Journal: Oilers trying to develop power forwards from within. If this team can get all the pieces put together is going to be very, very scary in the near future.

AHL news:

American Hockey League: Griffins-Marlies outdoor tix on sale. Having seen numerous games at Comerica Park I can attest to the fact that it is a great venue to watch a sporting event. Of course the highlight of my time there was seeing the Comerica streaker liven up a rather boring Tigers/Royals game on my birthday.

CFL Report:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news.

Illegal Procedure: A season on the Brink - Week 6. Focuses on running back Chad Simpson, and the Bombers curious usage of him.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, August 9th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Spots open up on the waiting list. Being on the waiting list does give you the opportunity to buy tickets and receive special offers exclusive to those on that list.

Winnipeg Free Press: Trouba keeping his hand in game. Sounds like he has performed well so far in the first few warm-up contests.

The Hockey News: 14th next season? The Hockey News predicts that the Jets will move backwards next season. Will there be a lot of losing in Winnipeg? Which Eastern Conference teams do you think the Jets are currently ahead of?

Hockey’s Futures: Mark Scheifele still top prospect in system. The good folks over at Hockey’s Futures give a breakdown of the Top 20 prospects in the system.

CBA news:

The Detroit News: Red Wings’ search for defenseman on hold until labor picture clears. Looks like they might not have a new d-man in Motown for awhile.

Comcast Philadelphia: Hartnell on CBA talks – Owners pulled ‘a 180′. When a player speaks candidly, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his position, it is always a worthwhile read.

NHL.com: Supplemental discipline focus of latest CBA session. Nothing too meaty discussed during this round of talks.

NHL news:

Phoenix Business Journal: Coyotes sale back on track. Appears Jamison & Company are back in business in the desert.

The Tennessean: 107.5′s Intern Adam sues Nashville Predators after injury. The standard “mental and physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life” as a result of the accident.

Hamilton Spectator: Markham’s NHL-style arena project takes a leap forward. Even if the Coyotes are saved, it appears that the folks in Southern Ontario want this arena built asap. Between Quebec City, Seattle and Markham you have to wonder which city would be most likely to get an available NHL team.

Friday Papers

Friday, August 10th Jets, CBA and AHL IceCaps news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Trouba playing, Housley coaching. Hopefully Housley can help teach the young gun how to pass as effectively as he used to.

Winnipeg Sun: Get in line for Jets season tix. So 2500 spots will be freed up on the waiting list, which isn't terribly surprising as those way down the list realize they aren't likely to get tickets anytime soon. Of course it does mean you can buy tickets when they are released instead of waiting in line. More interesting is that 128 tickets became available after True North cancelled those breaking the rules.

Hockey Prospectus: Top 10 Jets prospects. Corey Pronman, who will be a guest on tomorrow’s Illegal Curve Hockey Show, produced this list of kids in the Jets system. Read his article to give yourself a head’s up on the discussion which will take place tomorrow.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

The Telegram: IceCaps stay with what they know. Sticking with known commodities is probably a good thing for an AHL team which generally sees a lot of player movement throughout the year.

CBA news:

New York Daily News: Labor deal by Sept. 15 or else. The NHL continues their strong arm tactics. Of course if they allowed the negotiations to continue past the 15th, while keeping the season intact, they would be at the mercy of the NHLPA.

Montreal Gazette: Bettman’s legacy might be one of work stoppages. End of day, Bettman works for the owners and does exactly what his 30 (29 since Phx owned by league) bosses tell him to do.

Globe and Mail: NHL hockey on verge of being frozen out till new year. Both the NFL and NBA avoided losing seasons last year and the NHL, if they knew what was good for them, would be well advised to similarly avoid a season ending lockout.

Toronto Star: Ignore NHL threat to lock out players by Sept. 15 if no CBA deal reached. During negotiations anything can be threatened.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, August 11th Jets, CBA and AHL IceCaps news

Jets news:

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show, live from 9-11 AM today as the guys return from their one week hiatus. Guests include Frank Provenzano (Assistant General Manager of the Dallas Stars), Tom Lynn (former Assistant General Manager of the Minnesota Wild and currently of Veritas Hockey) and Corey Pronman (prospects writer for Hockey Prospectus and ESPN).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Half for you, half for me. (Subscription required). Is an even split the way to go?

Winnipeg Sun: Bettman trying for NHL lockout hat trick. After just one season back in the NHL, fans in Manitoba are being forced to nervously watch as time ticks away and we get closer to the September 15th deadline. Let us know who you hold responsible in the current CBA talks in our IC Poll.

CBA news:

Comcast Philadelphia: NHLPA has Plan B for potential lockout. Not that surprising that players would have a contingency in place.

ESPN: Owners, Bettman asking for too much. Seems somewhat disingenuous to be trumpeting the success of the league and then crying poor when circumstances dictate.

NHL.com: NHL, NHLPA meet for fourth consecutive day. The Jets Ron Hainsey made an appearance in New York.

New York Daily News: NHL and the NHL Players Association optimistic about new deal. Somewhat ironic that the ad below the article is to ‘Buy Hockey Tickets’.

Montreal Gazette: Would hockey fans forgive and forget another lockout? If it doesn’t cost them an entire season, then the answer is yes.

CSN Chicago: Social media playing a role in CBA negotiations. Social media is an avenue for fans to let the players and league hear their voices and let both sides know how you feel about the current state of affairs.

NHL news:

Toronto Star: Proceed with caution, Markham. If you build it, will they (NHL) come?

Buffalo News: Jeanneret considers Hall honor top-shelf. He holds the distinction of being the longest serving voice of any team in the NHL. He bleeds Buffalo Sabres and whenever he speaks he has such a reverence for the game and that organization. A real class act.
