Andreas Lilja, hip surgery, "should be back late October or early November,” Holmgren
Quote:
Philadelphia Flyers fans, it’s pouring in terms of injuries to your blueline. With Chris Pronger sidelined indefinitely with post-concussion symptoms and Andrej Meszaros out for at least a couple of months with an Achilles tendon injury that required surgery, things looked a little shaky, and now they look shakier: according to Helsinborgs Dagblad’s Linus Ahlin, Andreas Lilja has had surgery to correct a degenerative hip injury, and he’s going to be out for four months.
Lilja told the newspaper that he had grown used to having hip pain during the season but the pain usually went away during the summer. This summer, however, the pain did not go away and actually got a little worse. A doctor diagnosed it as a degenerative hip condition and recommended the surgery.
The veteran, who is currently at his home in Sweden, plans to return to the USA to rehab under the Flyers' direction. He will remain in the US to rehab. Even if the NHL season begins on time, he will miss the first two months. He had originally intended to play for Swedish team Rögle BK in the event of an NHL lockout but that plan is now out the window.
Lilja's injury now brings the number of healthy Flyers defensemen down to seven. Barring a new acquisition, Marc-Andre Bourdon and Erik Gustafsson are now both virtual locks to make the opening night roster unless Brandon Manning beats one of them out.

He says he's had problems for a couple of years, usually the pain disappears during the summer. Didn't this year so he decided to get surgery.
Says he might've prolonged his career with five years by getting a new hip and feels it's gonna be very different to get back on the ice, to be able to skate without pain etc.
He might actually be better when he returns. I've never been a fan of Lilja but the main reason is his (lack of) mobility...if the surgery helps there we could be looking at getting an additional viable d-man back for the stretch. Ideally Lilja and Meszaros can be close to 100% in March and heading into the playoffs...and that's the key. This is a playoff team, the goal is to be close to full-strength in April.
Alright guys, calm down. I am going to let you in on a secret. Lilja isnt good at all. Addition by subtraction. When you replace a bad player with an average one. its like replacing an average player with a superstar.
I trust
Kimmo-Schenn
Grossman-Coburn
Manning-Bourdon
Gervais
Over last seasons Kimmo, Carle, Coburn, Kubina, Grossman, Lilja and Mez. Although I think Mez would help this season so much.
