If we are talking about individual medals in single olympics then how about Aleksandr Dityatin (7 individual medals compared to 5 of Phelps)?

But my choice would be Vitaly Shcherbo. 6 golds (5 individual) in his first olympics, 4 bronzes in second olympics. And for me those bronzes are even more impressive because of circumstances.

Ah, so basically you want to debate who the greatest Olympic swimmer/gymnast is?

And even better. He didn't lose a single point in six years. Six. You read that right. I'm still a bit disappointed he didn't go out with a win in his last match.

This. If Bolt for example competed in 150m etc, he'd take gold in those too.

Ammount of medals =/= Best athelete.

Homer pick - Zatopek, not only for winning 5000m, 10 000m and marathon in just a few days at the same Olympics, widely considered one of the greatest athletes of the modern era. Bjorn Daehlie was also an interesting mention I saw there. Phelps and Bolt are up there for me as well, although I probably don't consider neither of them the "greatest" (hockey analogy - I would consider them Gordie Howes of Olympics, top 4, but not No.1 like Gretzky or Mario)
