Original Sharks Logo Contest

So if my memory serves me correctly, I was very young at the time, when the Sharks first came into existence they held a logo contest. I remember it in the Mercury News all those years ago publishing dozens of shark logoís. It would be interesting to see all those prospective logos with hindsight but I have never been able to find a link to them. Iím not sure if the winner of the contest became that original logo. Anyone have any insight into this, maybe a link to all those old logoís?

If I remember correctly, I think "Blades" won and the ownership said "Nuts to that, lets go with Sharks."

IIRC, they shut down the "Blades" idea because they felt it would be too gang-related, or something along those lines.

Is that why my suggestion of the San Jose Seven Trees was rejected?

You know I don't remember this. Too bad, we could have been the San Jose Semi-Conductors, seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

I was at SJSU at the time. I don't specifically remember a logo contest but it sure makes sense. I do remember ads in the Merc wanting people to send in suggestions for the team name. They were very public about getting people involved and excited about our new hockey team.

Pho is a mixture of very individual ingredients, bound by a team of noodles. You can't simply blame cilantro for the soup's failure to perform when it counted.

You blame the consumer for putting in way too many "enigmatic" bean sprouts, when what the soup really needed was rooster sauce to put some fire and passion into the team.

Oooooo I like this analogy. So clearly Dallas put in too much rooster sauce and needed more bean sprouts.

Actually they had already chosen the Sharks as the name by this time. These were just dozens of different sharks logoís submitted. Iím not sure if the winner actually became the logo we used.

Both Shark logos were professionally done by this guy: http://www.terrysmithcreations.com/

I think the contest was more or less for ***** and giggles.

My god. That is a huge 90's flashback. He also designed the Quakes logo which needs a major overhaul imo.

Love Terry Smith. It's funny to see one his Sharks logos become the Barons logo.

Every fan that entered their name-the-team contest was entered into a drawing for tickets to the 1991 All-Star Game in Chicago, so ideas came in from around the world. Besides the eventual winner Sharks, other finalists included Rubber Puckies, Screaming Squids, Salty Dogs, Fog, Icebreakers, Redwoods, and Blades. The Blades actually finished first but was rejected because of concerns over gang implications.

In the book Feeding Frenzy(must have book if you want to learn about the the first few years of the Sharks, great read) they go into the logo selecting process and show a couple. Bay Area Condors and the San Jose Screaming Squids have their logos pictured... take a look.

Lot of great pictures in this book you can't see anywhere else.

I wouldn't call that a major overhaul at all. They changed the color a bit and tweaked a few minor things. They need to get rid of that rising sun thing. I know it's SJ's city logo or whatever, but it looks pretty terrible.

There's a few iterations of the logo (mostly towards the end of the video) found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ebuJL39B9o
