Toews and Kane Confusion

How long are these guys under contract with us? I keep getting things confused. Originally I thought we had them for this upcoming season and the 2013-14 season before they were UFA's.

But Cap Geek and NHL 12 say they are with us for the 2012-13, 2013-14, AND the 2014-15 season. 3 more seasons total.

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this but I'm confused.

They both signed 5year extensions that started after the cup win. So they each are under contract for 3 more years. Oh and Hockeybuzz also shows contract amounts and lengths like capgeek does.

In 2009 they agreed to 5 year extensions that would start for the 2010/11 season...they've now had two seasons of that contract w/ 3 remaining.

Capgeek is extremely reliable. Always trust what you read on there for contract details.

The extensions didn't kick in until the season after they agreed to them. That's why they're signed through the 2014-15 season.

Our closing window is fast approaching because they wont want to sign with a bottom feeder when they do become UFA's.

Good point.

We better be patient and not overreact so that we don't become bottom feeders in a few years.

both posts cracked me up....

So.. ummm... which one is likely to be traded at the deadline in 2015? Anyone know how deep the 2015 draft is supposed to be? Should the Hawks trade up?

They'll both sign extensions before the 14-15 season begins.

I don't know about depth, but both Connor McDavid and Mathew Barzal will be available in the 2015 draft. Connor McDavid's the next, next, next, next one.

If we decide to tank really early, apparently Sam Reinhart is the most talented member of his family - and he'll be available in 2014. So will Ekblad, for that matter...and we do need D.

don't worry, we have them for 3 more seasons. I don't see Toews make it to free agency. Kane on the other hand - not sure about him

If Kane keeps playing the way he did last year, he should not be resigned unless he takes a pay cut.

Kane is worth 6.3 million a year - no doubt about it

Kane will have atleast 2 seasons over a PPG by the the time his contract runs out. He might be one of the first UFA's to make over $10 mil/year

Unless Kane's defensive game dramatically improves or the salary cap goes up by at least 10mil from 72mil, PASS!

..and FWIW, Parenteau actually outscored Kane last year in less games.

Kane should be PPG+ the next 3 seasons if healthy but he won't have an 8+ mil cap hit. Realistically, it all depends on what the cap is but Parise, Kovalchuk, Richards, ect were all under 8 mil cap hit because of the longer contracts. Toews+Kane will get lifetime contracts if permissible.
