He says he's had problems for a couple of years, usually the pain disappears during the summer. Didn't this year so he decided to get surgery. Says he might've prolonged his career with five years by getting a new hip and feels it's gonna be very different to get back on the ice, to be able to skate without pain etc.
I see that as a threat more than anything. At least it shouldn't be with the Flyers after this year.

Agreed. Hope Bourdon/Gustafsson/Manning seizes this opportunity and claims a place full time from here on.
Not that people should want a lockout, but it would clearly help this team if there was one.
Perhaps Holmgren was initiating some game theory with the Weber signing. Either obtain a top 5 defenseman in the league or increase the chance of a lockout with the absurdity of the cash flow in the contract. Either way, it gives the Flyers the best possible outcome.
The flyers do not want a lockout. They are one of the only teams that makes a healthy profit every year.
They make a profit but depends on how you define healthy. Ed Snider makes 50x on his other companies than what the Flyers bring him. He would miss watching his team play and chase a cup more than the money.
