not sure if you can say they are one of the "favorites," but I have to say, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's D looks pretty insane right now. Guess that's what happens when your GM drafts 500 defenseman in the draft.
they were pretty good last year, I think they'll compete again this year. Very interested to see what Joe Morrow can do in the A
- Some big AHL additions in Aucoin, Kostka, Yeo
- retained Zigomanis
- full season of Fraser and Deschamps
- possible maturation of Ashton, Blacker, D'Amigo
- big college FA signing in Abbott
- plus (based on the odds) at least one of the incoming rookies should do well from Ross, McKegg, Crecenzi, Broll
- at G, Rynnas is solid in the 'A' and it's still possible Scrivens will be waived/demoted
Also if Colborne can improve his consistency, he could be a top 5 scorer in the league. I think the Marlies look stacked on paper.

Is WBS ever bad? Usually when the parent club is good the AHL one sucks and vice versa

They have only missed the playoffs twice and have only had a losing record twice (inaugural season and 3rd season). The Pens have done a very good job of stocking that team with good prospects and select vets.

Well, I do believe that the Penguins' front office wants to give the WBS fans a winner. The WBS Penguins were the organizations' money maker during the lean years recently. I believe that in that regards the Penguins make an attempt to make certain that WBS has a competitive team that the fans will want to see. Plus their player development strategy seems to work well with veterans to show the prospects what they need to learn to become NHL players. I am certain that all NHL teams try to do this with their AHL affiliates, but because of the financial history, i think Pittsburgh makes a concerted effort to do so.

Teams that own their AHL franchise have more incentive to put a winning team on the ice than those that do not IMO.

I would agree with this statement so long as player development needs are being met. If teams are only worried about putting winners on the ice and not developing talent, the AHL franchises are not worthwhile for the teams. And sometimes the AHL fans believe that the NHl team does not have the AHL fans' best interests at heart.

Change that to frequently. The NHL teams do what is in their best interest. That makes them like most people.
Not including players on 1-way NHL deals, I think Keith Aucoin has been the highest paid player the last couple seasons and he makes ~$300-350k. I know there's a few other "AHL lifer" players making +$200k.
