It's still not the greatest contract, regardless of leverage and I really love Price.

Price was 2 years from being UFA, Max was 4 years. Big difference in $$$.

I agree Price did not give a discount like Max, but is contract is fair, not a bargain but not overpaid.

Just glad our key pieces are being locked up long term.

C'mon, PK...only you left.

I'm impressed by Bergevin. The impressive staff he put in place looking like they'll all pull in the same direction + good long term deals + some interesting FA signatures for the short term upgrade on the ice...

Now let's see all develop, then we'll see if he will be able to make the moves which can make the Habs take the next step, and those are the harder to make. But those move will probably be necessary only in 1-3 years from now. So let's be patient.

...and let's wait to see how he'll react when a storm will come up. I'm confident.

Next season will be a very interesting one, no matter how well the team play.

Now if only the autumn can start and the CBA could be signed...

Price's deal is downright bad. In terms of quantifying goalies he's not the best in the league (Thomas) and he's not the tier below (Quick, Lundqvist, Rinne) but he's getting paid a hell of a lot and relied upon for things that he's never accomplished (winning consistently, season in season out). I've written about this at length in the Price threads but his deal is the worst of both worlds - medium length deal with a medium-high cap hit.

He should've been signed for two to four years at 4.5-5.5 per - assuming there's a just universe.

What a bargain that is. I'm especially surprised that this signing came with the new cap and players such as Wideman getting signed to 5.5. million dollar contracts.

Since when are contracts in the NHL 'just'? There is no 'just' in a market system. Players get paid what employers are willing to pay. Period. If you think Price's deal is bad, I suggest you find out how many other GMs would take him for that price over that term. I bet you several would have paid even more for his services.

...sorry for the derail, go Patches!

It's not just the agent, it's the player as well. Not saying PK is greedy but you think Pacioretty's agent is happy about this deal? I mean we don't know what went on in the negotiations but if Patches has another year like last year IMO he would have been payed over 5 million a year, something similar to Skinner. Patches IMO loves it here and took a bit of a pay cut and just wanted to get an extension done

Hopefully PK does the same

You can't compare players being signed during UFA, they are always overpaid, you need to attract them to your team by paying a little more

I was just thinking the other day, what if Desharnais and Patches have a monster year and they have to sign them both to new contracts, they would both be in line for big raises. This is a pre-emptive strike that pretty much solves that dilemma. So glad to have Max locked up for 7 years.
I was thinking the same thing.

Would you offer Desharnais a similar contract (less money) now or wait until he costs $5M+? I'm hoping Bergy offers him a Burrows like contact which was basically (we were the only team that would give you a chance, so sign for no money for lots of years!!) lol --- $10M over 4-years would be bomb.

i gotta think Desharnais wants to stick in Montreal with Pacman, there money ,hand in glove......I would think "$10M over 4-years would be bomb" is optimistic.....

DD will get 80 pts this year min if healthy .

As i'm on record , he will be the Habs first 100 pt man in a long time .

He'll get 100 pts in a season before he is done .

Get the extension done now...

Desharnais WILL cost us a bucket, I am afraid...

Him, Patch and PK were by far the biggest bargains in house.

Probably not, since it only makes Montreal a better destination.

If Pacman is worth that , DD got to be in the same park or close ..

be great to see 6 yrs 23

Is any of Pacmans 4.5 protected if cap goes down next yr? So could be less too.

I would be careful with DD and would only extend him next year, I want to see if he can keep this up before committing long term

He has been producing constantly for the season and a half he's been with us. How much longer do we need to wait?

Next year, teams will pay a lot closer attention to him IMO, i'd wait and see if he can keep it up. I love the guy, but I'd wait before giving him a 5+ year deal

Would be fun to see some of the reactions in this thread had the Habs signed Pacioretty to a 5.5M cap hit...I'm guessing that 1M difference would of changed the overall mood of this thread lol

Don't take this as a sign I'm against the deal. Hell No. I love it. I'm merely being objective. Some believe he'll continuously improve and be a 40 goal guy. Maybe not, maybe he'll be a 30-30 guy and be worth 4.5-5. Maybe he'll hit 25-25 and be worth 4 mil. At the price, it's really not a bad risk but it may not be 'steal of the century' as some are claiming. So far, it looks fantastic and I'm under the assumption it will continue to look that way. Like I said, i'm just throwing something beyond the "BRB need to change my pants" comments.
Inflated numbers are important to look at to figure out how over/underated a player really is. Beyond the obvious leadership he brings, there are no signs of him slowing down. This is not a PP surfer, its a guy putting up 30 goals at ES. We are talking about a guy pulling the wagon here. A 5 on 5 monster, with a Poor PP season. As it stands today , this deal looks great, if he lights it up on the PP ... even if he's not as dominant 5 on 5 ... he'll repeat 30 g per imho. And if he does both, yes ... he can reach 40g.
