You are overrating kessel, to imply that statsny would not be the centrepiece coming back is ludicrous.

Even though overpayment, we would want Calder Landeskog.

Just a couple of years ago if I remember correctly, all 4 of the lowest seeded teams in the East playoffs went to the second round and the 7 and 8 seeds went to the conference final. Its like Gretzky said, 'you miss 100% of the shots that you don't take' . The Senators didn't tank out of the playoffs because they weren't a Cup contender last year. You have to learn to win. You have to take the step to make the playoffs before you can become a Cup contender. You won't go from rebuild to Cup favourite just like that, its a step by step process.
I don't disagree with a lot of what you've said. At some point young teams need to take a step forward and gain playoff experience (LA, Chi, Pit would be examples from the last few years). You also have a lot of parity so the gaps between teams aren't as big as before. I'm just saying that, "Well, the Kings won from the 8th seed" is a bit of an oversimplification of things. They were 2 points away from winning their division. Had they won as the #3 seed instead of #8, it wouldn't have been a shock to people.

No kidding, especially considering you just gave the guy a $5.5m per year contract.
