Trade 2:
Jake Gardiner + Toronto 2013 2nd rounder + Calgary mid-grade prospect for Bobby Ryan. Gardiner's a stud, but with Boumeester incoming and Reilly in the wings he's expendable, and Ryan is a beast and still young.

Anaheim would be happy with this
It would basically be Beauchemin , 2nd rounder and Calgary's mid prospect for Bobby Ryan..

Easily one of the worst contracts in the entire NHL. He's not that good either.

We don't have the assets to make three deals that will turn us into threats.

The cost to acquire: #1 center, #1 defenceman, #1 goaltender would be enormous. Even if it were possible, having those three pieces still wouldn't make us a cup threat.

Rielly, Komisarek, Kadri and Kulemin in the top 4/6 is supposed to impress us?

What?

Either they are a lottery team or they are a contender, make up your mind. Calgary says hell no to this.
Make up your mind?

I don't get it. You mean the Flames won't trade Bouw because they'd be worried he would make the Leafs a playoff contender?

Do you see how that statement makes no sense? Why would it matter what the ultimate goal of the Leafs was? Would Feaster be making this trade with the knowledge that Ryan and Luongo were also going to TO?

The title of the thread is "Three trades that turn Toronto into a legit eastern threat", but in the OP it says that the Flames accept the trade because the first rounder will likely be a lottery pick. Both things cannot happen. That is what the poster you quoted is saying.

However, if the trade with Calgary is the first trade to be pulled off then, in Feaster's mind, the first very well could be a lottery pick.

Trade 1:
Toronto 2013 first rounder + Reimer for Jay Boumeester + Calgary midgrade prospect. Make this deal first before other improvements, Calgary accepts as the pick could be lottery and they need a younger goalie.

Trade 2:
Jake Gardiner + Toronto 2013 2nd rounder + Calgary mid-grade prospect for Bobby Ryan. Gardiner's a stud, but with Boumeester incoming and Reilly in the wings he's expendable, and Ryan is a beast and still young.

Trade 3:
Lupul + Biggs for Luongo. Vancouver is in win now mode, this provides them with a playmaking winger to play with Kes and booth, and a nice prospect too.

Top 6
Kessel - JVR - Ryan
Kadri - Grabovski - Kulemin

Top 4 D
Bouwmeester - Phaneuf
Reilly - Komisarek

Goal
Luongo
Scrivens
Ok.

Um...you don't do that first trade first because what if that 3rd trade doesn't happen, the Leafs only have Scrivens and Rynnas who have never played a full season. Even at that, the Leafs wouldn't do that trade. I don't see why you take on 6.5 mil. dollars in contract when your giving up a first-round pick and as of the moment, your #1 goalie.

The second trade I don't even want to comment on, I do agree that Ryan is a beast but really you don't want a top 4 D involving Komisarek and a recently drafted rookie Reilly. So that trade would make the Leafs be going in circles or getting worse. And on a side note, I think Liles and Franson are top 4, not Reilly and Komisarek.

That third trade is an alright deal, but I just don't think it's the right one for either team.

So Joe Thorton isn't a legit number one center ? I admit it is rare but never say never. I also suppose it depends what your standard is. Are Mike Richard, Jeff Carter or Derek Roy legit number one centers ? I'm sure a lot of teams would like Richards as their number one.

A new take:

w/ VAN: Ashton + Colborne + 1st for Roberto Luongo + 2nd

w/ COL: Gardiner + Kadri + 2nd (VAN) for Paul Stastny

Now a playoff team, maybe a contender...certainly a playoff caliber team.

These trades make Toronto better for now but really destory their future by loosing young peices like gardiner, biggs and reimer and replacing them with older peices.

Gardiner and Kadri for Stastny...I wouldn't do Gardiner for Statsny.

Nothing from nothing leaves nothing as far as Luongo goes. Ashton (won't make it), Colborne (won't make it) and Luongo is done.

How's the future going to look when your first re-build core (i.e. Phaneuf, Lupul, and Kessel) decide to leave because they are sick of playing for a team that never makes the playoffs (all are UFAs this year and next).

A re-build only works if you can make the playoffs after five years or so, after that, you have to re-start. Edmonton will be in the same position when guys like Eberle and Hall get up to UFA age...if they haven't shown an ability to win, it is likely their talent will leave to try and have a chance to win something (just like Nash in CBJ).
