we could easily sign some random euro or something to be a defensive presence on the 3rd line. if matteau makes the team, we're in trouble.
besides we already have yayo as the two-way/transition guy on that line. we still need the board specialist and the scorer. obviously they're hoping teddy or butler is the scorer (though i'm not confident in either), so that leaves the boards guy, and i'd rather not have an 18 year old rookie as the guy on his line that is relied on for that kind of grinding game over the course of a full season.

Well if Matteau plays great in camp, I would not say we are in trouble if he makes the team.
Nor would I expect him to play 80 games. I'm sure they would rotate him in and out to keep him fresh over the course.
I think if u envision Ted and Butler as potential 3rd line guys, then Matteau defineately has a chance. He will need to have a big time camp, but the oppurtunity is there for him.
I don't think he is eligible to play in the AHL because of the NHL's agreement with the CHL. He can't go to the AHL until he's 20.
He can play in AHL. He didn't spend his draft season with a CHL team, thus, he's not part of the agreement. That wouldn't be wise though, I think Voynov was the only 18 yr old who played in the AHL.

Matteau should not be on the team. His body is ready, but his skill set is not. I could see him getting the 9 games too see how he does. Then he will be sent to the QMJHL to further his development
matteau does not possess sublime skills, he has not played at any level of competition anything close to that of an nhl game, and for that record he hasn't even played in one of the top three junior leagues. he is missing everything but maybe the size that allows 18 year olds to play in the nhl. nothing about that suggests anything less than a catastrophic failure if he plays this season.
i'm not writting his career off yet, i actually like the pick, but if he is one of the 12 best performing forwards in our organization in a month and a half, we are in trouble.

Yeah agreed. He definitely shouldn't be playing in the NHL right now. I'm sure there's other options. We need one more to fill our top 6 right now whether that's Sykora, or a trade eventually. Matteau should not be an option right now. I'd rather see Butler fill that role. I like the pick more than most, but there's no need to bring him to the NHL right now. We really don't need him right now, and shouldn't use him yet I don't think.

That would be wise for his development. I think he needs at least 1 CHL season before he can get a look at the NHL roster. Then, maybe next yr if he's too good for the QMJHL, he'll be with the Devils farm team.
Signing the contract is a good thing to get done. Lou then has the ability to get things done if there is a lock out for any length of time. In terms of the Kid making the big club, I find it hard to believe that he will make it. I think he should get some serious development time in the Q this year. Top line mintues, he won't get that in the NHL or even in the AHL. Lou really never rushes kids and I don't think he is going to start.
So if he doesnt play any games (9 max) his contract slides one year, correct?
Unless it gets changed in the new CBA, I believe this is the case, yes.

I don't if anybody is complaining, they're just wondering what the point is if he's not expected to play in the NHL this season, and others are explaining the thinking behind it.
