Wayne Simmonds Signs Extension (per media: 6 years, $3.84m cap hit)

From the Flyers' official site:

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have re-signed 6-2, 183-lb right wing Wayne Simmonds to a multi-year contract extension, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“We are pleased to announce that we have agreed to a multi-year extension with Wayne Simmonds,” Holmgren said. “Wayne plays the game with courage and honor and we believe he will continue to be a very good winger for our organization.”

"I'm extremely happy to have this deal in place,” Simmonds said. “We're going to have a good team in Philly for a long time and I just wanted to be able to be a part of hopefully bringing a championship back to the Philly faithful."
From Bob McKenzie (TSN):

Quote:
Wayne Simmonds has agreed to 6 year extension with PHI. Not sure on precise AAV but hearing it's around $4M per year.
From Tim Panaccio (CSN Philly):

Quote:
Source tells http://CSNPhilly.com that Simmonds deal has an AAV of $3.84 million
From Frank Seravalli (Philadelphia Inquirer):

Quote:
Wayne Simmonds has spent a little more than one full year as a member of the Flyers, but he took a huge step on Wednesday to making Philadelphia his home for a long time.

The Flyers and Simmonds agreed to a 6-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday morning.

Simmonds, 23, will earn approximately $24 million over those 6 years with McKenzie’s estimated $4 million in average annual value. It is unclear how the deal will be structured as to whether it is back-loaded or front-loaded.

That seems to be the going rate for these young guys. Would like to have seen another 25+ goal season from Simmonds before signing this extension, but $4m is not a lot on the cap. Even if he regresses, it wont be a huge albatross for everything Simmonds provides.

Love Simmonds but not in love with this contract. I'm one of those guys that believe Simmonds production will be dependent on his teammates.

Which is why he's going to be usually with some good teammates who can give him offensive chances. Also, he's very much a garbage goal kind of player and physical and can fight. He's the kind of player not only the Flyers love, but one that can do well in the current NHL system.

Good job to go ahead and lock him up before the end of next year. If he has a another career year this coming up year he could of been more expensive.

Good to see that Wayne Train will be in the station for six more years.

How dumb does that sound? ^

He's more valuable than his stats. He brought it every night. He was a different player in the playoffs but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt of a long season and injuries. I think he could be a guy who sees his numbers fluctuate because he's not really a dynamic scorer. He gets those dirty goals and this team needs that, especially if Hartnell isn't back after next season.

I agree but i think his skill is underrated. He is pretty much Hartnell's protege. The only thing that gets Simmonds in trouble when he turns into a finesse player instead of just playing that good ole meat and potatoes style. He needs to be more of a north and south player instead of east to west. When he went on droughts that was part of the reason why. He tried to do too much instead of relying on his more skilled line mates to do the finesse work for him.

I don't understand why Holmgren can't let Simmonds repeat his success before spending big money on him.

Because he would probably be more expensive if he goes onto having a career year.......

If Holmgren expects Simmonds to become a 30g, 30a player, then it's quite possible that he thinks Simmonds will be worth more by then.

At first I was skeptical, but a $4m cap hit is nothing with a $60m+ cap.

you cant just ask a 20-some year old to put on weight, especially 20 pounds. Simmonds is probably playing at the weight he feels most comfortable at. if you ask him to gain weight, it will most likely hamper his abilities, such as his speed and skating

No issues with the cap hit in the slightest, I like this signing a lot.
