Right and what if he continues to get better? Maxing out at 30/30? He would be more expensive as he gets better and not only that but physically mature. He does more things then just score.
Love it. Plays both ends of the ice and gets the dirty goals in front of the net.
Hate to say it, but this is probably the nail in the coffin for Hartnell as a Flyer. Unless he's willing to take a significant pay cut, I'd say this is his last season in the Orange and Black.

Difference is that Hartnell has proven that he's worth his pay. Simmonds had a career year. Here's hoping he proves it wasn't a fluke. He has a long way to go before he can replace Hartnell though.
If Hartnell has a solid season this year, but not a career year like last, I could see him taking less than market value to stay here. Something along the line that he is making now
Good deal. 4M isn't that much on today's cap. I love what Simmonds brings to this team. Hope this doesn't mean Hartnell will walk next year, though. We need both of them.
Totally love seeing Simmonds locked up for the next seven seasons... Love his game... He certainly is he kind of gritty player that Flyers fans love -- his coming back from face shot and then removing his shield has 'Flyers' written all over it -- Along with his gritty play, he also brings many intangibles to the Flyers and his community outreach... that so many loved Philly athletes demonstrate... is great for the City and for the Flyers.
I really don't think it spells the end of Hartsy, as long as he doesn't want to hold up the team for a monster contract... which I honestly don't see him doing. I believe Hartsy -- who also is a great community force in the Area -- wants to stay with the Flyers, and the Flyers want him. At his first Meet the Flyers Event I told him he was born to be a Flyer, and he agreed with me wholeheartedly. To me both Simms and Harts are players struck in the old Flyers mold.

I really don't see why you think this. A 1 mil raise for Hartnell would be no big pill to swallow and manageable.
Kimmo @ 6.3 will likely be off the books and there are no defensive players available next offseason to throw that money at.
****ing awesome. I love Simmonds and love this deal, hopefully this will stop the trade board from putting him in every Philly proposal. Just need to give Hartnell a contract now and we'll have two amazing power forwards on our top two lines for another 5+ years.
I agree but i think his skill is underrated. He is pretty much Hartnell's protege. The only thing that gets Simmonds in trouble when he turns into a finesse player instead of just playing that good ole meat and potatoes style. He needs to be more of a north and south player instead of east to west. When he went on droughts that was part of the reason why. He tried to do too much instead of relying on his more skilled line mates to do the finesse work for him.
Simmonds shot is no where near Hartnell's though. 90% of Simmonds goals are going to come near the crease. That's not a bad thing, but its worth noting. I agree with the rest.

If he was capable, he would have done so by now. He just doesn't have the body type to hold weight. If you ever saw him up close, you can see he's tall and lanky. Its amazing the game he plays considering this. He's wiry strong.

His slap shot isn't Hartnell's but his wrist shot is very sneaky and underrated. But he will always be the garbage goal scorer.
Good deal for both parties.
Simmonds would make more than this if last season would be the norm for him. I'm ok with paying him $3.8m per year if he can provide 20 goals and be a pain for the other team night in and night out.
As far as the Hartnell scenario, I hope we don't see the same situation with Hartnell-Perry as we saw with Carle-Suter. Meaning we go all-in on Perry in free agency and have Hartnell as back-up plan who will then decide to sign somewhere else.
I don't think the situations are 100% comparable but there is a chance it'll develop similarly.
