This is a contract I just don't get, far to long of term and the dollars are too high as well. Why not wait until after a new CBA as well.....just doesn't make any sense.
14% shooting percentage, set career high. Started 57% of shifts in offensive zone while being somewhat sheltered against bottom pairings/3rd lines. He's good player, but I doubt he can consistently reproduce this season offensively.
His S% was about 12% the two previous years. It shouldn't regress that much. His offensive and PP role should increase as well

His previous career shooting percentage is 10.5% if you don't include his 14% this past season. Multiply that by his 197 shots and you get an 20g scorer. Still good, but is it worth 4mil long term?

I would say no, especially when you consider where he is at defensively.

He had two straight years of twelve then this year at 14% for three straight years of at least 12%. what makes you think he will go all the way back to 10?

Take stats. Leave out best and most revelant season.

Agreed. He has the tools to be a good 2-way player. He's good on the forecheck though and hustles a lot, but I wouldn't equate him as a good player defensively. He had 0 PK time and was gifted PP minutes and soft zone starts. People assume he is great defensively since he's 'scrappy'.
Couple more years, but pretty much the same thing Jones got with the Avs, sounds about right. Secondary scorers will see a rise in their average price over the next few years if the cap keeps rising.
His shooting percentage is so high because he is a net presence. He has a good shot but that's not how he scores. He fights and gets in front of the net and scores the garbage goals. Which is why he will continue to get better as he physically matures as most power forwards do.
You can't compare his time in LA and time in Philly because his role was different.

Good signing. I'm not going to pick apart stats and ignore the fact that he's still a pretty young player who seemed to continue to improve last year. Even if he never gets 28 goals again, the rest of his game will continue to round out and he'll be a big part of that team going forward. 6 years at what he's arguably worth now is a good deal.

He could put Hartnell-lite numbers if he's strapped with Giroux full time, I agree.
He could also regress to his norm production with LAK. Contract could look scary.
Simmonds was never utilized in LA like he was in PHI. Not sure how you can declare his LA numbers to be the norm while ignoring a whole heap of new opportunities he received in Philly.
I'd look at his shots rather than his SH%. In LA, he averaged 123 shots over three full season. In Philly, he was a hair under 200. Even if you deflate his SH% to "the norm", he'd still be a 20+ goal scorer. And that's using his SH% from his rookie season (7%) -- an outlier.
$4m for a 20 goal scorer who provides an excellent physical presence is still reasonable. I dont see any way this contract looks "scary" provided he is given the same opportunity he had last season.

In today's $60m+ cap? Yes, absolutely. Especially considering he does more than just score goals.
EDIT: And again, you're including his rookie year SH%. I would assume he has developed his goal scoring touch since then.

This is the biggest problem I have with the contract, you are assuming that he will continue to improve every year like this and then hand out a 6 year contract. What if he regresses, what if his defense doesn't improve, would you be ok with a 15 goal 40 point guy for 6 years at that salary. A shorter 2-3 year term makes way more sense, it is just taking way to much risk for the player.

yes, hindsight is 20/20. He could regress to Gomez levels, then this contract would look terrible!
