The areas he needs to improve in are defensive play, and consistency.
This sums it up well.
Even if he stays a 25-25 type player, improves defensively and continues to provide a physical presence, particularly on the forecheck, he'll be worth every bit of this salary/term.
Even if he regresses offensively (lets say 20-20), but gets more consistent, more responsible defensively, and maintains the physical edge, it's still not a terrible deal.
Looky here another OWNER offers and signs the cheque to another contract of SIX YEARS on the same day they pretty much say there won't be a season this year because they 'want a player salary rollback and no contract longer then 5 years'. There seems to be a large disconnect between Bettman and the owners he supposedly works for. If there was that much unity between owners you would think they would freeze all signings and contract offers until a deal is reached. But NO it seems like teams are trying to lockup good young players for as long as possible before a new deal comes in to play.
Lol at the plethora of haters and their one, tired joke. I'm looking at you Rags and Pens fans...you mad?
Why would Rangers fans be mad? I wouldn't sign Simmonds at this contract.

Lol at the kings fans too. The ones who think we care about their cup. They probably would've won with Simmonds and Schenn anyway. And trading Richards didn't cost us a cup even if you think it got you one.
We love the deal. Unanimously. That should tell you something.
Uhh that's not even remotely close to being true, it's a hypothetical scenario where you assume that Schenn + Simmonds will offset the high, Selke-level of play Richards had these playoffs.

The trade-impending jokesters wouldn't be mad literally, but more in the sense that that phrase has come to refer to. Basically, whatever the deal was, they'd have picked it apart. And its s good deal, so there's not much to go after other than the length, via the trade jokes.
Richards was a good player for them, he was integral in their defensive performance. Take Richards and the kings weakest forward, replace them with simmonds, schenn (+ a 2nd)....are the kings still cup champs? Probably, the difference between those two sets of players isn't enough to change how things went imo.
In 2007-2008, the Flyers signed Scott Hartnell to a six year deal at a 4.2 million dollar cap hit. Everyone mocked it, yet today it's great value. Oh, and Hartnell had yet to have a season like Simmonds had last year in the goal department. This contract is cheaper, the cap is higher, and he's younger. What's the hate for?
Grats Philly fans, I think it's a great signing. Simmer brings a lot of intangibles to the table and he gives it his all every shift.
I really miss the guy and was sad to see him go, but I guess I can't complain, seeing what we accomplished last year.
Hope he solidifies as a top-6'er for you guys!
Thanks for the kind words. I still love the trade and did you get a chance to watch Brayden's game in the playoffs improve? I think this kid will turn into a flat out stud. Plus with his brother here now....!

If he stays a 25-25 player and doesn't improve defensively, I'd still say the contract is pretty fair in today's market. If he improves defensively, the contract should look great.

I expect him to be a twenty goal guy, sometimes more. That plus the other things he does makes
3.8 for him in todays market an acceptable value. The three its years which will be played under a higher cap are what make thus a good deal for me.
