one guy i really wish we had kept and would have come in really handy during the chokey WCE years is martin gelinas. a few years into his 30s, he wasn't scoring 30 goals anymore. but he did play gritty, heart and soul two-way hockey, helping his team to two stanley cup finals and scoring some big goals along the way.

if burrows' production drops in his next contract but still does all the other things that make him indispensable to this team, i'd still happily pay him between $4 and $5 million a year.

I hope this isn't supposed to be offensive but you really look like a hypothetical offspring of Willie Mitchell and Dustin Brown.

4-4.5 per imo is fair value, especially given some of the cap hits on the team already. Wouldn't mind a 4-5 year deal tho.

Burr deserves a good contract. I hope he retires a Canuck.

Gillis needs to front load the money and lock out proof it to make it enticing to sign now at a lower cap hit.

With the CBA uncertainty coming up, a fair deal at $4-4.5M but heavily front-loaded should be a no-brainer I'm thinking for Burr. Good value for team, but front-loading it protects Burrows from any unpleasantness from a roll-back.

Burrows is 31.

5 years like this:

- $8 mil
- $7 mil
- $3.5 mil
- $2 mil
- $2 mil

= $22.5 mil/5 = $4.5 mil per.

Give him 6 years front-loaded:

9
5
4
2
1
1

6 years, 3.67m AAV

by the time his play drops off (around year 4) hopefully the cap is high enough that 3.67m for a PK specialist is reasonable. i'm sure there will be small market teams willing to take a chance on a 35 year old Burrows at 2 mill actual salary, too.

Add a year for $1.5M at the end and I'm in. 6 years, $4M AAV with a nice payday up front.

Pay him for the numbers he produces, and all the other facets of the game he brings, but also realize the fact that a lot of that stems from playing with the Sedins.

At the end of the day, Burrows is 2/3rd line tweener, who can elevate to 2nd line production when playing with the Sedins.
Disagree. Burrows is a perfect 1st line support player. He'd have that same chemistry with any players that think the game on his level, if he were a UFA you'd have teams lining up to over pay the guy. That being said, I really hope we get him for the contract you suggested. That would be fair for both parties if he wants to stay in Vancouver.

Agree.

If burrows is a 2/3 without the twins, then the Twins are 2nd liners without him.

Your point doesn't make sense. The twins were 1st liners scoring at almost a PPG without Burrows on their line. Last year they were exactly that with him.

Burrows was a 2/3 tweener who could pot 15-20 goals before joining them (think Hansen).

The argument should be that they don't get 100 points + Art Ross/whatever Daniel won without him.

Burrows is a perfect fit for this team, works his ass off, has great chemistry with the Sedins and can PK with the best.

That being said he will be 32 when this contract will kick in. Id be very hesitant to sign Burrows for more than 5 years; I think 4 years is a perfect term for both parties. Also knowing that the mid thirties is where players usually start to slow down in production Id be very hesitant to give Burrows more than $4.5M per.

4 years at $16M would be perfect.

I hope we don't see any more ridiculous front loaded contracts.

something like 7 5 4 4 2 over 5 years with a $4.5M cap hit. Maybe he skips the last year, but ....

When Burrows got put on the top line the Sedins went from 70-80 point players to Art Ross winners. Last year they were back to being 70-80 point players even with Burrows. I wonder where they'd be without him....

2 can play this game.

3 years, 12.3 million. That will look him up for the next 4 years, and I think any longer than that isn't really needed. I'm assuming we will have to go an extra year which I'm ok with, but I'd prefer the 3yr extension.

Why are these retirement contracts ridiculous?? I think they're only ridiculous because people don't understand that the player is likely to retire before it expires, thus the long term benefit greatly outweighs the downside.

Short term (1-2 years) I'd have no hesitation paying Burrows $5+ million. He's almost as valuable as Kesler is to this team, and Kesler is a bargain at $5 million right now.

Longer term though, I wouldn't. For 3+ years, I wouldn't pay more than $4.5 million.
