Gill can keep the low slot cleared and really that's all I'm talking about. You don't see many checks down-low, we have a guy on each pairing that can do the dirty work.
I don't think he is a needs to play 20+ mins a night or we are in trouble. Good signing, but you have to remember there is a reason why he is signing on for a million bucks.

I agree. I wouldn't be shocked if this is a depth move and we're not done looking at D-men yet.
Question is, are Philly, Nashville, and other teams in 'Screw Detroit' mode? If Philly get's J-Bo and Doan stays in Phoenix, who does Detroit sign or trade for?

Saw this posted by Fugu in the DRW forum. From KuklasKorner:

....With the Hannan signing, the Predators now have two defensemen with more than 800 games of NHL experience for the first time in franchise history (Hannan, 908gp; Hal Gill, 1,070gp). Both veterans – in addition to top-four blueliner Kevin Klein – also perennially rank among the League leaders in average penalty kill time on ice and blocked shots.
Yeah Tootoo, sign with Detroit. You are replaceable.
Nice pickup.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
We just needed another vet defender so that we aren't relying on three incredibly young players on the blueline. This will provide competition at camp, and it will give us some flexibility. If Josi, Blum, and Ellis are all playing better than Hannah, we can sit him. If one or two of them begin to falter, we have a vet to plug in. It isn't like Hannah is the guy we were waiting to sign so that we can go win a Cup. We needed a vet, and we got one.
Thrilled with this signing He gives us what we need for cheap. I'd rather do this than have to sign Carlo to a 3 year, 4 mil deal or something. This give us D pairings of:
Weber-Josi
Klein-Hannan (very good shutdown pairing)
Ellis-Gill
Blum-Ekholm
Bartley-Jarvinen
PK: Weber-Hannan/Gill, Klein-Hannan/Gill
PP: Weber-Josi, Ellis-Klein/F moved to point
We have 10 Dman that can likely play in the NHL (I hope Blum and Bartley both get the chance this year). Love it.

Not sure how I feel about this move. I like Hannan and all, but I would have preferred a reliable 2nd pairing guy, rather than a 3rd pairing guy who can only fill in on the 2nd pairing in a pinch. Maybe we're not done
