He won't come close to replacing Suter, but it's a great signing by the Predators. Hannan's become slower and isn't getting any younger but is still solid on the defensive side, although he doesn't bring much of an offensive game at all. Still, aside from Weber and Gill, that was a young blue line before this signing. With signing Hannan, he brings a lot more experience which will prove to be very useful.

From the article on NHL.com:

Quote:
With the signing, the Predators now have two defensemen with more than 800 games of NHL experience for the first time in franchise history -- Hal Gill is tops on the roster with 1,070.
I like this signing a lot. I figured he'd get around the same as last year and he did, exactly. Solid price for one of the better defensemen still out there. He should have been signed sooner. Great call by Wheatley too.

That guy used to be pretty good with the Sharks, what happened?

There's another one I wanted to post but can't find, it's from maybe two years ago when Klein sliced up the defense and set up Tootoo. Can't remember the season or the team.

This is the same Klein that when there was a huge logjam (Timonen, Weber, Suter, Hamhuis...) blocking Klein, the organization had him move to RW in Milwaukee so they could try to convert him to forward.

He was pretty good in Colorado as well, but as he got older he got slower and slower which is normal and speed wasn't exactly his calling card even when he was on top of his form.

I think if Nashville is planning on anything more than 12-14 minutes a night and on the PK on a 3rd pairing they are getting the wrong guy. Very serviceable in that role, he was playing about 15 minutes a night in Calgary and fading a bit. I'd expect a little less from him this year. It will sort itself out in camp and they'll have a useful vet, but he should not be pencilled into anyone's top pairing...

I feel like this was a good signing by Nashville. Another experienced defenseman to help develop some of the younger players. I can understand being an older, slower , defenseive defenseman. It is always nice to play with young speed guys.

Good for Scotty. There was an old Sharks playoff game on the NHL Network from 2004 the other day, reminded me just how awesome Hannan was. I'm glad to see him get a contract.

I like it. Nice crutch for the kids. I fully expect Josi and Ellis to still have huge roles this season with Blum and Ekholm in the mix as well.

Great signing. Can't go wrong getting a proven veteran d-man for 1 million. He's no Suter, but at 1/7th the cost he may be a better value for this year.

If Blum goes back to being his old self, oy.
If you switch Ellis and Hannan, you're in good hands. Well.. I'm not sure about Josi being capable of keeping up but that's not what the thread is about.

Weber / Josi
Klein / Hannan
Gill / Ellis or Blum
Ekholm

Likely what we're looking at for next season.
Ideally he'd be on your 3rd pairing, although I don't know if if he or Gill is worse at this point.

Josi is very good, the early nickname was the Swiss Suter. It's a matter of pairing the players

Weber-Josi is a natural pairing.

Klein-Hannan is nice. Klein is a very fast skater and could use some muscle.

Gill-Ellis was the pairing before. Big slow with fast small.

If Hannan fails and Blum steps up, Blum pairs with Klein.

There are other far slower dmen who get by. If it's a good system then it'll work. Obviously he's gonna get blown by here and there but he's not slow to the point of being unable to play.

Anyways, some team should've gone and offered him well more than $1 M considering what some of the other guys are getting. He can hold down a number four role fine.

I think Ellis and Gill are going to be paired together.

(Anyone remember those Cingular cell signal strength ads? )

Hannan is definitely a depth signing. He will be battling with Josi, Ellis, Blum, and Ekholm at camp to decide who plays and who sits in the press box. He gives us a nice option if one or two of those guys don't look ready. He also helps the PK when he's on the roster. Doesn't hurt to have an experienced Dman in the event of injuries, either (provided that injury isn't to Weber... or Klein, though I think Klein is a damn robot). I like bringing in the vet blueliner. It was definitely necessary.

As far as forwards are concerned, the Preds could use a legit #1 center (like a lot of teams). Otherwise, I like the forward corps. Young. Hungry. Talented. Just need that center to bump Fisher and Legwand down.

edit: and nice call, Wheatley

???

He is probably the most mobile blueliner on the team, and he is one of the most mobile skaters on the team. He is a very good skater.

Went over mine too. Klein is a fantastic skater, on our team he rivals Legwand and Erat.

Since Trotz has already said on the radio that he will try Weber-Josi on the 1st pairing and Gill-Ellis on the 3rd, it's a given that Klein-Hannan will most likely be the pairing for the 2nd. Blum as the 7th D and most likely rotating with Hannan/Ellis.

Or a rotation of Hannan and Blum?
