Juniors players who are under contract to NHL clubs do receive a small stipend, I believe. And for purposes of determining amateur status and eligibility, the NCAA considers the CHL to be a professional league.

Matteau should go to the Q for at least a year in order to develop his offensive game and turn him into a scoring power forward. No need to rush him along just because he is physically ready for the NHL, doing that could stunt his development.

CHL-NHL agreement prevents players drafted out of the CHL from playing in the AHL before either age 20 or 4 years of juniors.

And also the kid turned into a beast for me in NHL12 (obviously relevant). If he turns out as good IRL, New Jersey fans should be real happy with him.

Matteau was drafted out of the USHL, so he'd be eligible to come in earlier. Most recent example off the top of my head is John Carlson; drafted out of the USHL, played his age 18 year in the OHL, and age 19 in AHL.

Ahh didn't know that. Girgensons for Buffalo has a chance at the AHL this year also, but I still think it's pretty likely he ends up in the dub. I think in a lot of cases, teams would rather have their picks playing a boatload of minutes and being able to produce big points in lower/junior leagues than struggling on the 3rd line in the AHL at that age. It's just a safer bet for their overall development in most cases.

Do players attend school while in juniors or is it straight up hockey?

100% yes, it's mandatory.
