I went after the ump in a softball playoff game today. (Mostly just to see how far I could go. :p )

We were losing by a lot, just basically playing out the 5 innings before the mercy. Ball gets hit to second, our shortstop gets it, steps on the bag AND tags the runner. (Force was on.) Ump called him safe.

Didn't affect the outcome of the game, but I let the guy have it into the next inning. I was kinda mad he didn't throw me out because I gave him some really good stuff, somehow not swearing in the process.

Better try harder next time. :p

Meet one of my new roommates today. Really chill guy and one that I can get along with. Added bonus is that his girlfriend lives near by with a bunch of attractive single roommates.

I imagine those umps are used to getting a lot. I umped Little League for four years and I only tossed one guy and warned a handful. I personally expected to catch crap, but as long as it was brief and didn't go on too long, I never said anything.

I umped throughout high school, but only did softball so it wasn't too bad. Never tossed anyone but came close once. Ended up filing a complaint about the coach, and it turns out I wasn't the only one and he ended up being banned from coaching. But even doing games for 10-14 year olds got annoying after awhile because the parents were so freaking obnoxious.

Yeah, this guy was a known troublemaker and it was only a matter of time. The other umpires loved me after that, and the guy never coached again because in our league you had to apologize before the board if you were ejected, which he never did.

I never remember the parents being too bad, and the bleachers were pretty close. But our league had a rule banning parents from standing right behind the backstops, which helped.

The only thing that ever bothered me were the occasional long games with the 8-10 year olds where no one could throw a strike.

I've been an assistant/goalie coach the past three years. This is my first as the head coach.

I'm nervous and excited about it. I just hope I can handle the extra workload.

I have an experienced assistant coach who was actually the head coach on the team I helped coach two years ago. So, I can lean on him at times for stuff.

Re: Coaches / refs / umpires.

I've helped coach Stewie's soccer teams on and off over the years. Never been the head coach for a full season since I lack formal training myself, though I've filled in for games and obviously help with practice. In the years he's been playing (he doesn't play every calendar session), I usually miss only 1 game (~10%) of his season due to work, etc.

The funny thing is, at his age, if his team was / is opposing a team with a d-bag / d-head coach, any time he and his teammates aren't in the game, and are on the sideline waiting to rotate in, they'll mimic the d-bag coach to each other in mockery (but not to the opposing coach, and all this without any clue-in from the parents).

Bottom line, kids can identify first-hand when an opposing coach is a tool.
Fortunately, from what I've seen it's rare.

======
In another incident, Stewie was called the "N-word" by an opposing player. Both 5th graders. After the game, Stewie told me, then his coach. His coach told the opposing coach. If that was uttered to another boy by a player I coached, and it was believable (either I heard it firsthand, or it was a credible secondhand complaint because the boy was a known potty mouth in prior practices, games, etc.) the offender would apologize, sit half a game as punishment, and his parents and teammates would know why. If my son was the offender, there'd be a crisp smack included.

Possible reference to the South Park parody of JRRT's LOTR. (the quest to return the mistakenly swapped DVD of "Back Door ***** 9")

"It is too far and too dangerous to go alone. Take with you the wizard, the dwarf, the warrior, the cleric, and the Jew."

Bulbasaur is the easiest to get started with, though, because you go through rock so early.

I'm downloading the game "Slender" that I keep hearing about. I'm by no means a gamer - I play NHL and Madden on 360 and that's about the extent of my gaming - but from what I hear, for a free game, it's horrifying.

Edit: Scratch that. Game seems too big for my inspiron laptop. Computer-savvy folks: any chance an Inspiron 1420 can run games and I'm just doing it wrong? Settings and what not.

at the fair in that small antique building. Was gonna pick up a Vanek jersey (authentic for 90) but it is gone.

Edit: Slender IMO is scary if youre playing in the dark at 3 AM. If you beat it there are other game modes to play

True, but with the saving glitch you can have all 3.

Always started with Charmander, never got the appeal of the others.

Charizard is easily the best of the 3 at max evolution, too.
