he isnt a defected player because he didnt sign in another league.
he became a UFA July 1st 2012 (his first july first at 27yo).

so bolts have no claim to him.
Technically, Tampa could have tolled his SPC back in '09-'10, but they chose not to - he was just suspended w/o pay, burning that year off his contract. Tampa gave him a QO in 2010 and retained his RFA rights until he became UFA eligible on July 1.

Whatever happened to Stefan Legein?
Whatever happened to Paul Ranger?

Time for Chad Kilger to make a comeback.

Really nice to see him back. He gave the Rangers fits. Really solid player.

Interesting How he signs as soon as we no longer have his rights.

Purely speculation... But I wonder if he just wants to play locally, and the AHL in Toronyo is close to home? I wonder if he can ever be the player they thought he'd turn into after this much time off during some key development years. As a hockey fan I hope he can pick up where he left off.. As a leafs fan I hope he mounts a Lupul style comeback and gets an NHL contract!

He can't possibly pick up where he left off, he can't be anywhere near in shape to play in the NHL. If he works himself back into shape and has overcome whatever it was that made him have no desire to play pro hockey, I would hope he would at least talk to Tampa, since we've bent over backwards to see him through... whatever the heck it was we saw him through. The door was always open for him to return, he was asked more than once if he was ready to return and reassured we'd be here when and if he decided to do so. A token conversation as appreciation of that would be a nice gesture, even if he has no intention of coming back here.

it could be personal issues, or could be a simple lifestyle choice.

Well if he was coaching then he is getting ice time, not the same but he still is. I doubt he is completely out of shape and I am sure he could get back into shape. Obviously he would have to pick up where he left off in terms of his level of play but once you have that skill it will always be there, you just got it get into the shape to use it. AHL should be a good start to get back into the game.

reality is we dont know yet what really happened. more than likely he would have been in contact w the lightning about a return and asked if he could stay close to home for now, while he works his way back.

He apparently attended Carleton U (in Ottawa) for a bit after his leave - or at least was spotted there several times. One of the rumours, which is all these are, was that his girlfriend (fiancee?) was struggling with the constant NHL lifestyle, and that was one of the reasons he quit. Maybe she's from Ottawa or went to school there? I cant tell you how true any of that is, but sends like there is some connection there.

He was a fantastic player a few years back for Tampa, honestly thought he would be a top 15 dman in the league by now.

Hoping for the best for him in this comeback.

So am I completely missing something, or did Ranger just find a new way to get out of a contract? Shouldn't he still have time left on his Lightning deal, or did his "personal leave" count as workdays?
