Well that, and the gigantic difference in contract and ability (between Weber and Phaneuf), yeah.

It would take a fair amount more than just Couturier to get Weber though. Poile wanted Couturier+Schenn++.

Weber - Schenn++ = Phaneuf.

Amirite?

Simply put, would you rather have Weber or Phaneuf + Schenn++?
But since neither deal makes sense the comparison really doesn't mean anything outside of a discussion on which move would make less sense.

It seems like a waste of talent having one of either Schenn or Couturier playing a bottom 6 role while your defense is sorely lacking. Evrn if Couturier does well defensively, there are other defense specialists around the league who don't have offensive talent to stifle anyways. I doubt both reach their full potential if one is playing a pure shutdown role.

Just my opinion.
"Bottom 6" is a misnomer in this sense. Couturier should see as much ES/PK time as anyone in the top-6 not named Giroux.

That's because too many folks here foolishly equate categorization with market value equivalency.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Brayden Schenn is on an EL contract @ 3.11 & Couturier has a 1.375 EL.
These are the types of contract that allow a team to pay out the big $ long term contracts that came with NMCs (Briere) & still have talent throughout the lineup.

It's easy to say trade 1 for a big $ defense but the cap means it requires other trades (or tossing in other contracts). A straight across trade for a Phaneuf type contract doesn't work.

I think its just you. IMO, OEL is among the top d-men trade value wise in the league. Other guys in the discussion would be Pietro, Karlsson, etc. In comparison, Luke Schenn is buried WAY down on the list.

I think Edler unsigned for Schenn + Schenn is a fair deal for both sides. Canucks get two good young pieces with potential and control them for a longer time, but Phillie gets the best player by far, and certainly doesn't seem to have trouble retaining talent that they've traded for. The gamble on Edler's contract is the only reason he'd even be available for those pieces.
