Sorry but I didn't miss the point. I would rather be thin at forward than D.
It's not thin at forward vs. thin at d, though. It's having an overabundance of defencemen against having a terrible bottom 6. Having an overpriced 7th defenseman is NOT as important as having a competent 3rd line, which we currently do not have. They're not good offensively, not especially fast, and not a shutdown line. They just aren't very good. If a team can trade a 7th defenseman to improve that situation they'll do it almost every time. I wasn't saying Hannan is a must, but I think dealing Murray (or one of Braun/Demers) to improve our forwards is becoming increasingly necessary.
You mentioned if we trade Murray, then have an injury then we'd have Hannan/Pelech/Vandy etc. in the lineup, which isn't the worst thing ever. What if one of our top 9 gets hurt, or worse someone from our top 6 (Havlat)? What if Handzus continues his terrible play? What if Wingels has a Demers-like regression? What if Galiardi just is what he has been the last 2 years instead of the guy we faced in the playoffs? Is Sheppard alive? We have way more questions on the offensive side, and are 1 injury away from catastrophe, rather than a Hannan type player playing 6th d minutes.
I don't know where they would put him. He isn't suited for a 3rd line role and isn't good enough to be a top 6 player.
I think he could work on the 3rd line if he had a decent center, i think he could play up to his line mate/s if they are decent players. If he plays with what looks to be our 3rd line i don't think he'd do much, he does not make players around him better, he is bettered by those better around him.
The #4 doesn't play as much as the #1-#3. Not to mention in your case, even having Murray as a #4 means your #5 and your #6 are Pelech/Irwin/Petrecki. At that point, the team would be screwed regardless of the Murray Hannan debate.
Yeah, and it wouldn't be Sturm either so I don't get your point.
It just seems like you tried to make a bad joke with the Calgary reference and it backfired.
Aww.. sorry you aren't a fan... Too bad, doesn't change the fact that Hannan and sturm are crappy options for trying to improve this team. I'm fine if you don't get that. As long as DW does.
From what I have heard from the Stars guys, he is not a good 3rd liner and better suited on the 4th line. McLellan might run a TJ-Zeus-Burrish as his 3rd line but if we were a team with any depths, we would have a 4th line of TJ-Desi-Burrish which would be one of the best in the league.
Doesn't matter much what the stars fans say. One of our advanced stat posters put up a big thing a while back about how well he was doing against good competition in a 3rd line role.
People rag on THorNton all the time too but the advanced stats seem to say he's awesome.
