Sharks invite Samsonov to training camp?

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...867/story.html

Larionov said his client Sergei Samsonov, the one-time Oilers winger, will be getting a tryout with the San Jose Sharks, if there is an NHL training camp. Samsonov, who was on the Oilersí 2006 team, didnít play at all last season.

I was hoping the Ducks would sign him last offseason when the UFA market was beginning to dry, instead the Ducks trusted Jason Blake to be a decent 2nd line winger at 39 years of age. Eventually they picked up Hagman so money wasn't an issue. Samsonov with Koivu/Selanne and Blake on the 3rd line would have been better.

14 points in 20 games with Florida should have been enough for Samsonov to get a new contract somewhere last year, or at the very least a camp invite. Good to see him eventually getting one.

How cruel of the Sharks. Invite a player to camp, knowing there won't be one. Classless trolling.

I find it more interesting that he didn't play at all last season. I would have thought he would have played in the KHL or Europe but I guess he is still young enough to give it one more try in the NHL.

Maybe Thornton suggested it to management.

I was surprised he wasn't given an invite, but not surprised he wasn't given a contract. 14 points in 20 games is impressive, but it's simply something Samsonov does to garner attention when he's an impeding UFA.

When Carolina grabbed him, he put up 32 points in 38 games (after 4 points in 23 games with the Blackhawks). Carolina was so impressed with that possible production, they signed him to a 3 year deal.

In those 3 years - 103 points in 211 games, including two below-30 point seasons. Guy dropped off the map once he got his contract...that is, until he was traded to Florida and his production suddenly skyrocketed.

GMs pay attention when stuff like that happens. Makes them wary to hand out contracts.

This should be interesting. If Samsonov plays to his full potential he could be a 65-70 point scorer and add a bit of a bite to the Sharks lineup.

None that I could really see when he played in Carolina.

And he could score 40 goals if there was no goalie....

Not a chance. Samsonov is a great guy.

Confidence issues, sure. He gets into a major rut when he has a cold streak. Starts shooting into the bread basket. But no attitude problems that would stop him from getting a contract.

Seems like a super low risk move to me. I hope it works out.

I know that from his short stint in Montreal, that's an impression he gave... probably was more like you say, he hit a cold streak and everything went awry, especially with the stupid medias here. But I agree, hope it works out for him and the Sharks, he sure has wheels and hands.

This is very possible. I know the two of them got along swimmingly in Boston.

Surprised he didn't sign for a KHL team.

Samsonov hasn't had a 50 point season since 2001-02.

I have a hard time thinking he'll even surpass that lower 50pt bar as a 34 year old, let alone 65-70pts, after having taken a year off, and having surpassed 40 points only once since the lockout.

He could be a good player. If Antti Miettinen can get a contract in the NHL, Samsonov should have no problem.

Samsonov was my favorite player growing up as a B's fan. Granted he's close to 15 years older then he was back then but he was as skilled as any player in the NHL back then. I'd take him back in a heartbeat, although it would be more out of nostalgia then anything else. I didn't even know he was still playing.

I didn't realize that inviting a player that was once quite good to camp on a tryout contract was considered desperation. I guess the Canucks were "that desperate" last year when they signed Nolan and Fedoruk to tryouts last year in camp.

The more you know, apparently.

inviting someone in to camp is never a bad ideo. I mean look at Peter Sykora last year, made the in camp and scored 46 points this season
