Pronger's best was better than Lidstrom's best, so of course I have to take Pronger.

If you're gonna use "pretty good" as a reference point for Pronger, Lidstrom has 1995, 1998, 2008, and 2009 as "pretty good" runs where he didn't win the Smythe either.
Pronger was easily the best player in 2007. Niedermayer's Smythe was politics.

2007 and 2010 conceded (which I still don't agree with), Pronger's 06 run is still better than anything of Lidstrom's.

Pronger carried his teams, Lidstrom played superbly but had all-time great supporting casts.

Yeah and with that all time great supporting cast, he managed to nab a Smythe... That argument goes both ways

Pronger is really lucky that his teammates bailed him out in the two games he got suspended in 2007. If Anaheim lost the game and lost a close series, Pronger would have been the goat

And Pronger didn't have a great supporting cast in 2007 and 2010???

In 2007, Scott Niedermayer got the toughest even strength defensive assignments. Lidstrom never had that luxury. Pronger looked super impressive in the playoffs, but how much of that was because he had the luxury of dominating second rate competition at even strength?

In 2010, Pronger was the #1 dman in all situations, but Timonen wasn't chopped liver, and the Flyers sure had a stacked group of forwards (and don't forget that 2 of their 3 top forwards were just leading players on the Kings).

2006 is the only season Pronger "carried his team."

Pronger. Lidstrom may be a top 5 dman all time, but we're talking about prime here. Lids is considered one of the best ever because he was consistently good. During Pronger's prime he was on another level (Hart trophy level)

The guy should have at least two Smythes

Can you compare the 06 Ducks or 10 Flyers to the 95 to 02 Red Wings?

95 when Lidstrom was a sophomore player? 02 Lidstrom won the Smythe on a ridiculously stacked team. He outdid all those other all time great players when it mattered. And being the best player on a team like that is really saying something to how good he was.

In 07 Pronger was second fiddle to Neidermeyer and put up less points than Lidstrom while Lidstrom played one less series. I know points arent everything but Lidstroms D is every bit as good or better than Prongers.

He really didn't. Pronger played better defense, created his Pronger intimidation factor (Pronger is the most intimidating defenseman since Scott Stevens), and even outscored Niedermayer. He was more valuable to the Ducks for that run, and only didn't win the Smythe because of the politics of his suspension.

That was a very weak Conn Smythe. Anybody watching should remember that Pronger was a force and Nieds was just pretty good.

I assume you mean the 2007 Ducks. Isn't there a running argument here whether the 2007 Ducks or the 2008 Red Wings (of which Lidstrom was quite clearly the #2 playoff performer behind Zetterberg with a performance that was IMO was better than Pronger's 2007) was better than the other.

Of course, the 1995-02 Wings were more stacked than any team that played in the salary cap era. They also had to get by the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars, two more teams that were more stacked than any team of the salary cap era, just to reach the finals

In the NHL playoffs, Pronger

In an international tournament, Lidstrom

Pronger was more flashier than Lidstrom. That doesn't make him better.

In his prime, Lidstrom played every single game perfectly. Pronger was suspended in some of his best runs, and he relied on his team to bail him out.

Prongers best will never put him into the top 5 status that Lidstrom has.
