Toronto gets a defenseman who can be used in match-up situations, on the PK, and in all other key defensive situations. He looks like a good partner for Dion Phaneuf. With young kids looking ready to come in, moving out MacArthur to make room makes sense. Nazem Kadri might be able to put up as many points in a full season.
Chicago really needs to add some support talent to play with their big-4. While MacArthur isn't an impact player, he's a guy who will be able to put up points in a secondary scoring role. The emergence of Nick Leddy and the addition of Johnny Oduya make Hjalmarsson somewhat expendable. Franson comes in to play 3rd pairing and help on the 2nd PP unit.
This is a deal I might make after training camp has concluded. Kadri would step into Clarke's spot and his hands should lead to numerous opportunities for Grabo and Kuli. It really depends on Kadri.
The reason I say might is because I question Hammer's value. He looks "solid" on a pretty good team... but so does a guy like Doug Murray and I doubt he costs as much as what the Leafs are giving up in this proposal.
Franson might not have a defined role here in Toronto.. but he has NHL skills and needs to play the body (imo) to get more TOI.
If Franson remains as good as he is.. fair deal. If he matures and evolves into the player many feel he can become, Toronto gets savaged in this proposal.
I like the base of the deal but Franson is still young with potential, and can play a 2nd pairing role now. Right now skill wise, its a fair trade off, but i think CHI may have to add a pick as insurance to even it out.

Oh really? That's why he was benched for 25 games. Does have potential for a good pp specialist, bottom pair dman but f man, that kid needs to use his body. Value is probably good, as Hjalmarsson is worth mid-late 1st, MacA a late 1st, and Franson is a mid 2nd.
I'd say yes as a Hawks fan. Why would the Leafs do this?
Because Franson likely won't ever be able to use his offensive abilities on the Leafs, we have better players for that (atleast in my opinion) in Phaneuf, Gardiner and Liles and we just drafted Rielly who almost certainly will be better as well. He would be 5th on our team in that category in a year or two. We could use a player like Hjalmarsson on our team and if it's MacArthur who has to be added to make it happen, so be it, he is already starting to become expendable due to prospect development. I would think Chicago would prefer a package of Connolly + Franson since he can slide into #2 center, would Hawk fans like that though?
I originally was going to come in and say we already gauged the value to be Bozack instead of MacA. But if Chicago is happy with this I would much rather trade Clarke over Bozie.

Decent offer. The only knock is that Hjalmarsson is a Left handed shot which leaves only Komi and Holzer as Right handed D on the Leafs. Not sure I'm comfortable with that.
McAurthur for Hjalmarsson might work as long as it was something different than Franson involved. I don't think he has much value to Chicago.
I think Hjalmarsson would do very well in Toronto and I think MacArthur would be a very good fit in Chicago, especially if he was getting a few less shifts in Chicago.
Toronto doesn't have a reason to trade MacArthur though, do they?

Toronto has no reason to trade MacArthur right now but will probably be forced to move him if the youngsters like Kadri and Frattin work out to be as good or better.
Mac is a really good player whom has good character and work ethic. A bit streaky at times though.
I doubt the Leafs will entertain offers for Mac until at least after training camp has ended.

That makes sense and was along the lines of my question. Thanks for the responses. I'm just not sure he's redundant yet until they see what the team looks like together.
It would make more sense to me for Toronto to wait until after the season was underway before entertaining the deal.
Value seems decent, but I don't think Chicago needs to be trading quality for quantity. I'd much rather trade Hjalmarsson+ for a good, face-off winning center or some such. Wing is the last position the Hawks need to fill up. We have young wings and NHL ready wing prospects coming out of our ears.

As a Leafs fan I would be tempted to pull the trigger on this deal.
However, the thing is, Hjalmarsson is a left handed shot. Ideally, I would like to acquire a #4 D-Man to play with Liles on the second pairing (Liles also a left handed shot).
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Liles - Hjalmarsson
Would be a nice top four, but I'm not sure about having two LHD's on the same pairing.
