Nice signing, one dude called this a couple days ago! We still need some offensive help. Come on PHX fail miserably in your owner situation an come here Doan!

I think the best case scenario is that Blum steps up and wins the second pairing job. Then Hannan is available as a nice depth defenceman in case of injury or if one of the kids falters.

It's a good signing. #6/7 guy - upgrade from Cube/Hillen for sure. Down Suter or not, if we're not overall better than we were starting last year, we're not any worse, either.

We went this route instead of the expensive JayBo route because we know we will be spending on Doan now.

The Preds need offense. Defense wins championships, offense determines by how much.

In Hannan, the Predators completed their defense corps and found a veteran mentor for all of their young defensemen.

Josi has Weber to help ease his transition into a higher role. They don't play the same game, but playing with Weber will nonetheless aid in the development of Josi's game next season.

Klein now has Hannan as a mentor. Hannan brings that hard-nosed veteran brand of shutdown positional defensive play that will allow Klein to use his skating to round out the offensive side of his game and still allow him to improve defensively as well.

And finally Ellis now has Gill to show him the ropes. Offensive dynamo meet defensive pylon. Due to his size, Ellis has to use his positioning to box players out from the net front and get to pucks first in the corners. Gill is a master of positional defense because he simply cannot play at this level if he was to chase the players and pucks all over the rink.

Blum, Ekholm, etc will be allowed to grow into their full time NHL roles now as opposed to being thrown into the gaping open spot on the blueline that existed as of Friday morning to see if they can stick. Hannan is a trade deadline playoff addition that is costing the team no assets. It is a very good signing for what the team needed.

You can't argue with bringing in a veteran d man like Hannan for 1 million /1 yr. He's better than Hillen. I'm liking the pairings. Hannan is also a PK specialist who will take up Suter's PK time. If Blum or Ekholm play better then he's the 7th. Much better depth in case of injury.

I literally can't find a downside to this signing. If it was at 2mil, I'd be nervous, but 1mil is so cheap for today's market. As others have said, he takes some of Suter's PK time. We nwo have 10 Dmen who could play in the NHL in a pinch, which means we can sustain up to four injuries and survive (hopefully that will never happen). My hopeful opening day roster.

Weber-Josi
Klein-Hannan
Gill-Ellis
Bartley

ADMIRALS
Ekholm-Blum
Jarvinen-COR
etc.

Don't forget about Bartley. I think he could be a sleeper to get some good playing time this year.

By my count the Ads have 9 dmen coming into camp.

Ekholm
Bartley
Bietetto
Aronson
Foss (Will most likely go to ECHL CIncy)
Jarvininen
Moore
COR
Valentine

Man, if these kids are what they're supposed to be, losing Suter will hurt but not really that bad.

Is Kubina still available? To bolster 2nd pairing.

Josi-Weber
Kubina-Blum
Ellis-Klein/Hannan

What are we doing with Gill?

I'm happy to go into the season as we stand today back on defense. I'd still like to see one more forward added though...

me too. our group of mediocre forwards arent built for the playoffs. much less a deep run. better hope smith and wilson progress quite well.

I would rather have Hannan than Kubina.

Lots of good words about Hannan on Flames board.

"This guy is gritty as they come", Sounds like a Predator to me.

Kubina has no mobility anymore (not that he had much to begin with). Do not want.

Carlo Colaiacovo would have been better, but likely wants a longer term deal. This helps bridge to our younger guys, hopefully he plays well and the younger guys do improve enough to take over for him in a year.

my only concern is we have 4 gritty d-men/non puck movers in Weber, Hannan, Gill, and Klein. But I guess that fits the mentality of the team.

Im guessing the hope is that Blum will earn his way back into the lineup and hannan will end up filling the 7th man, injury-replacement, Frankie Buillon role...

We'll struggle moving the puck out of the defensive zone without Suter. Hannan doesn't help. Josi and Ellis can do it, but Ellis will be protected again. Can Klein play this role if paired with Hannan?? Pekka better be ready when the turnovers start to pile up.
