And it is really hard to compete for jobs with someone with 2 Master's and 10+ years experience.

So, yeah, Alberta has loads and loads of jobs and this is a great time to be graduating, but only if you're graduating from the right program.
I'll agree with that. But it's not just the Petroleum, oil & gas industry, it's trades people, all service industry (even small public), as well as professionals. An economist can find a job, maybe not something ideal, but with the right experience, anything from project management to human resources or something. Alberta is being built in all sectors except federal. However teachers, police officers, and such things like fire fighters have trouble with jobs, only because everyone with an arts degree is pursuing them.

Obviously certain programs, such as the fine arts, are tough markets, but if you can't find a job in this province, then you won't find one in any province. IMO anyways.

The truth is, the pilot market in Canada is beyond saturated. As a result, pilots have to endure extremely poor pay and working conditions for the first 10-15 years of their career. I want to have a family, and I refuse to tell little johnny he can't play hockey this year because daddy just took another pay cut or got laid off.

Case in point, my starting salary with Nav Canada as ATC is triple what I made in my best year as a flight instructor.

It's a long and daunting road, with lots of ups and downs. The industry sometimes comes to a complete standstill and there's no upward movement for years at a time.

The advice I give aspiring pilots is basically this:
You need to want to fly more than anything in the world. It needs to be the driving force in your life. More than family, pay, benefits, stability, lifestyle, and living location. If you can honestly say to yourself that yes, 10 years from now I will be happy because I am in an airplane, then it's probably for you. And if you can get beyond the drawbacks, it's an amazing career - just go in with your eyes open.

-----------------

Best of luck with the RCMP though! Law enforcement is always a good career move if you're interested in the field.
Thanks. Not so much interested in the field vis-a-vis the pay. RCMP officers earn DOUBLE the average Canadian's salary. I figure if I get hired (I've already passed the written and physical tests) I'll do it for a few years and then pursue my flight aspirations. I don't really care about being a pilot in Canada, I'll gladly move overseas. But who knows? Maybe I'll enjoy being a cop.

Best of luck with Nav Canada.

I'm a former member. I gave it up after nine years after I started having hearing troubles and got stuck having to work in administrative roles. It's a good career (not for everyone) but I hope it goes well for you!

Now I'm a field manager for an oilfield security company.

I'm sorry, but we all have really lame jobs. I was hoping somebody was a contortionist, mime, or magician or something. Or if somebody worked as a spy or specialist for CSIS or CSEC, that would be pretty bad ass too.

1. Those aren't jobs, they're hobbies, mostly. And if they are jobs, they're either not making enough to be on the internet and browse hockey forums, or they make so much that they could be part owner of a team instead.

2. Couldn't tell you if they did, I bet.

Maybe one of us is Stajan. Man, I'd feel bad for him... or Bouwmeester.

29, graduated from the UofC in 2006 with a BComm, and now work in marketing at a large architecture firm in Calgary.

I was never interested in accounting, land administration or engineering, and the older I get the more I see that that is where the money is, atleast in Calgary. The city is very energy-dominated, with alot of young people having too much money for the experience they bring. But it's an old boys club, and alot of these kids have connections.

Also, I was like alot of you when when I joined the board 10 years ago. I remember being 19!

While my account is indeed legendary, I can assure you that the deliverance of tasty and delectable cream-based treats has never ceased to function. Business is booming, especially these days.

31 year old graphic designer. Worked in San Francisco for a while but recently relocated to London through the studio I work at.

Always been a lone Flames fan, first in a sea of Sharks and now in a sea of no hockey. But thats ok cause I love soccer also and its pretty fun to live in EPL country. Hope to visit Calgary one day and the Saddledome!! When I tell people that, they are like "huh?"
