Not bad, not great. Nobody can say they know how this contract will turn out.

Bruin fans everywhere want to thank Tamby for over paying. Now Chiarelli has to do the same for Seguin. Nothing like a moronic GM setting the bar for the rest of the league.

A concussion that occured from the grabovski stick to the face =/= injury prone.

The same nagging injury that Hall has is.

And this is what is wrong in the NHL currently. Hall has done absolutely nothing to deserve this contract.

That's fair, I agree with you.

But for others to call this a terrible deal just shows they don't have a clue.

Hall has done nothing to deserve such a contract and this is further proof of what's wrong with the NHL.

Yikes...

He's a solid young player but I wouldn't have gone for more than 4 years. He still has to prove that he can play an injury free season.

You essentially said that if the Oilers place too much value in their high end players and not enough in their depth that we (Oilers fans) should get used to last place. The comment about not having good enough depth players is fair but I take exception to the the last place part. If you're not willing to back that part up it's an empty statement and should have been left out of your post.

Regarding Hall's contract I'm perfectly happy with the hit and very happy with the term. He obviously got a bit more money since we bought up some of his UFA years so while it might feel a bit on the heavy side now it will be a bargain in the future. Also, since he was already getting 3.775 this is only a raise of 2.225M for another 7 years of Hall which is very reasonable.

Pronger is injury prone? Look at his injury history before his current freak accident injury...barely any

so no, Pronger was not injury prone at the time he signed that extension

Hmmm...this takes him to UFA does it not?

Was hoping for a higher cap hit haha, good for Edmonton though.

Hopefully Eberle asks for 8 per

I'm a big fan of taylor so I don't wanna say he's overpaid but I don't think the Oilers really needed to give him all that money.

That has to be a record contract for a guy who has a career high of 53 points.

Tavares - 67 points, 5.5M.
Karlsson - 78 points, 6.5M.
Hall - 53 points, 6M.

...what?

I don't agree with my fellow Philly poster on his assessment of Hall's deal. However, this comment reflects some serious stupidity.

The Flyers screwed up on Pronger's deal. The fans have called them out consistently on it. How in the world does the Flyers making a mistake that they continually get berated for somehow limit the ability of their fans from having a similar opinion of another teams deal?

I think Hall will be super, but the people poo-poo'ing this contract simply believe that you pay for production, not potential. It's an entirely reasonable thought as many, many players were expected to be great, but missed out due to injury or something else. I believe you can get a potential bargain by taking the risk... others see it as an unreasonable risk.

Completely off topic:

Pronger IS injury prone because HE WILL NEVER COME BACK AND PLAY IN THE NHL.

Sorry for yelling, but it needed to be said.

That has to be a record contract for a guy who has a career high of 53 points.

Tavares - 81 points, 5.5M.
Karlsson - 78 points, 6.5M.

did you forget he played only 61 games last year?

Hall scored at a 45 goal pace from November until his season ended. He was also on a 4 game goal scoring streak when he got hurt so there was no signs of him slowing down. He got off to a bit of a slow start but once he scored that hat trick he was the best player on the ice for both teams almost every night.

Edit: I also love how people are saying he hasnt done anything yet. He went 1st overall. Hes as close to a sure thing as you can get these days.

It's really not an overpayment though....you have to remember, you're not signing him for just a year or two to his next RFA contract - you're buying out 1 or 2 of his UFA years as well. You could essentially be paying $6 million for a 40+ goal 40+ assist Taylor Hall. Then who's complaining?

Yes I know he could flop just as well but from what we've seen of Hall stepping onto the ice, the only thing that can stop him or slow him down is a injury/freak injury. If I was Edmonton, I'd like my odds that he takes off and kicks his game up another notch over the next 3-4 years.

EDIT: he's also the face of the franchise. You can't put a price on that.

It's clear who doesn't watch him play on a consistent basis.

His explosiveness carries the team even when he's not scoring. They're noticeably bad when he's not around.

Tavares signed his deal after his 67 point season. So while your general point still stands, you're misrepresenting facts a bit by suggesting that Tavares signed at $5.5 million per season following an 81 point season.

Oilers overpaid by 200-300K on this, but they eat up an extra year of UFA over the Tavares/Skinner contracts. I guess that's why?

His points/game speaks for itself - he's almost at (if not already at) the same scoring paces of guys like Tavares and Skinner. I don't mind the deal. It's just a risk given his injury troubles.

To me he's the worst of the big-3 (and probably worst of the big-4), so my only worry is that guys like Eberle/RNH will ask for 6.5 when it's time for their pay day.
