Gill is a two way force, a big body that crushes and destroys the opposition. I'll never forget how dominant he was when he lead the Penguins to the Cup as their #1 and nearly took the hapless Montreal Canadiens all the way just one year later.
Smid. Love Gill - he's amazing on the PK. But just too slow. He's going to make a great coach.
And hapless is a better term to describe the flames, don't you think? Where were the flames when the 'hapless' Habs were headed to the ECF? Oh right....
Last season it was Smid, not by a huge margin, but by a decent margin. A bit better with the puck, and most importantly more mobile, Gill really is exceptionally slow (especially now). Gill still has some advantages over Smid, can be very effective defensively against cycle games where his size and positioning makes him an excellent shutdown dman, but I think Smid was more versatile, and better overall. I expect the gap between the two to quickly increase in the future, Smid is 26 and could still get significantly better, while Gill is 37 and his game could fall off a cliff at more or less any moment.
