First Round Bust: Top 20 Wild Prospects

It's that time of year where the HF top-20 is winding up, we await the unveiling of the Hockey's Future rankings to bash and other sites start coming out with their own lists. So Dan and I thought, why not have one more?

And that's what we did.

Instead of just doing ten like last year, the number of guys are doubled. One, the prospect pool is good enough where twenty seemed reasonable and two, we're up for it.

Our plan is to count down from 20 to 1 and update this post/thread as it goes. We hope that we can explain ourselves, have a compelling argument and at worst be told how ****ing wrong and idiotic this idea is because that's how the internet works.

Top 20 Prospects:
#1 - Mikael Granlund
#2 - Jonas Brodin
#3 - Charlie Coyle
#4 - Mathew Dumba
#5 - Johan Larsson
#6 - Matt Hackett
#7 - Brett Bulmer
#8 - Jason Zucker
#9 - Zack Phillips
#10 - Mario Lucia
#11 - Johan Gustafsson
#12 - Darcy Kuemper
#13 - Erik Haula
#14 - Daniel Gunnarsson
#15 - Raphael Bussieres
#16 - Kris Foucault
#17 - Nick Seeler
#18 - Tyler Cuma
#19 - Chay Genoway
#20 - Tyler Graovac

Fringe Stuff:
Introduction
Honorable Mentions (in no order): John Draeger, Colton Jobke, Adam Gilmour, Christoph Bertschy, Lou Nanne, Stephen Michalek, Sean Lorenz, Kyle Medvec, Justin Fontaine and Joel Broda.
Not considered a prospect: Steven Kampfer, Nate Prosser, David McIntyre

Lucia is going to be a stud. Just going to take him a while to get there.

This looks sorted by round rather than actual quality of the prospect.

Only because Lucia was LATE 2nd instead of early 3rd... but it's close enough. The only reason Hackett is that low on the list is because he was a 3rd rounder... that's also the only reason Phillips is so high and Larsson being so low.

Either way, it's pretty clear they put in no thought about development since each player was drafted and where they project to be when considering that development.

Found the HF Wild top 10 from 2009:

1. (3) Tyler Cuma, D
2. (1) Colton Gillies, C
3. (2) Benoit Pouliot, LW
4. (6) Marco Scandella, D
5. (15) Maxim Noreau, D
6. (17) Cody Almond, C
7. (5) Petr Kalus, RW
8. (7) Clayton Stoner, D
9. (8) Morten Madsen, C
10. (9) Justin Falk, D

I think the Wild might be as good or better 11 through 20 now than they were 1-10 then.

Interesting. It's kind of hard for me to place him. He has the skills, but I really only see him as a depth player. He is a very skilled depth player though, which is good for Houston and Minnesota.

I guess I could see him being a PP specialist in the future.

From what I've seen of Genoway, he definitely looks like a career AHLer.

I am still holding out that Graovac is the classic late bloomer. I thought he looked really good at the Sunday scrimmage during the prospect camp. Curious that he can't crack top 6 on his junior team. I think his ability is higher than 20, but the ranking is probably spot on based on his history.
