You generally have to overpay to get UFAs today. Sure there are the odd "hometown discount deal" - but they're the exception rather than the rule.
Actually his rights were never traded to Buffalo so he was a UFA at the time. Canucks were looking to re-sign him but made the mistake of giving him a "take it or leave it" offer; Sabres came in and offered him a much bigger contract once he was officially a UFA.
Actually his rights were traded to islanders, and then when they couldn't sign him, the sabres traded for him something like a day before free agency and signed him a few hours before he hit the market......sorry.
No... I don't think the Sabres think Doan is the "missing piece" to push them over the top... I believe this is nothing more then to inject a culture change in the franchise...and to change the perception of the franchise. The young guns coming thru the system will learn from one of the hardest working most dedicated players in the league.
Sure it's over payment...but Buffalo will always have to overpay in order to get players who are sought after league wide until they establish a winning commitment. It's just another step in the process.
Doan is a good leader, a good player, and a hardworker. He would be perfect for Buffalo IF Buffalo was in win now mode. Buffalo has been doing well in building for the future. I don't think Doan helps in the future.
I probably sound like a broken record right now, but that's my opinion.
I know Darcy's handcuffs are off now...but if we sign Doan at this price, and he tanks, and Leino doesn't improve much...It might be "Off with Darcy's Head!"
High Risk / High Reward move...Personally I don't like it, and think we should save the money for next year's FA crop, or to take on more salary through a trade....
Doan needs to stop playing his crying game and just sign with someone already.
I keep coming here to see if any updates on where or when SD will actually put down the kleenex and sign a deal but instead I get an appreciated education on Buffalo and not much more. I am going to have to go down and check Buffalo out, it sounds like it has improved a bunch since I was there in the 80's.
I think that Doan would be an excellent fit in Buff and help them move up a notch. He is desperately needed by Phoenix for so many reasons I can't see him leaving but here we are so much time away from UFA day and he hasn't chosen anyone yet.
It makes me wonder if he is waiting to the last minute for an offer that will get him out of the desert and on to greener pastures.
I hope he stays in with Coyotes and that the team stays in Phoenix for several reasons, their fans deserve him and the success he has brought them.
i dunno, maybe i'm wrong but it seems Doan is just waiting to re-sign in Phoenix because he hasn't signed anywhere else yet and has a very good offer on the table. as far as Buffalo goes, moving and living there didn't stop a pretty good d-man in Christian Erhoff from signing with them!
Where has Doan been whining to this extent? Honest question, I stopped following this a while ago.
I don't believe he's made a single statement since July first. He obviously wants to stay a Coyote and is simply waiting to see how the ownership mess plays out before he signs a long term contract either in Phoenix or elsewhere. It's a remarkably simple concept that remarkably simple minded individuals on this forum have failed to grasp.

In TSN.ca video (entitled "Shane Doan: Still in Limbo"), Doan says:
"The longer it takes, the more likely, ah, the harder it seems to be to get a deal done with Phoenix.
For me its going to be about my family; and about the right situation for us, and the right situation for me as a player, to have a chance to win and enjoy the game. I think that's a big part it -- is being in the right spot and enjoying it. There's obviously, ah, there a few teams that, ah, fit that.
I'm hoping to get, ah, you know, I would like a longer term deal."

Wow, what a crybaby. He really needs to quit playing games.

Doan and Erhoff are two totally different personalities when if comes to signing with any team. With Erhoff, money is by far the deciding factor with playing for a cup contender or a special team or city both two distant secondary factors. The Canucks, a solid cup contender and a fun city to play in offered Erhoff the same that Bieksa got - $4.6 mil X five years. Cup contender or good city didn't influence Erhoff. He grabbed the long term, front loaded contract and ran all the way to the back laughing.
Doan places playing for Phoenix and living in the Phoenix area his highest priority, playing for a cup contender if he can't stay with the Coyotes his second choice and money only in third place. Doan has always stated he will not sign until he knows if the Coyotes will stay in Phoenix or leave. He has done his due dilligence and talked with cup contending teams he would consider and he is aware that other teams can and will offer him far more than what the Coyotes will pay him. That points out just where his priorities are and it's not on how much he can earn. An attitude very much like Burrows on the Canucks.

What games? He wants to resign in Phx he's made that crystal clear - every GM knows that, and every GM knows he's going to wait as long as he can to give Phx a chance.
If GM is prepared to wait for the 20% chance a Phx deal falls through they should just remove themselves from the "game". GM's should perhaps stop playing games with the fans if they aren't prepared to wait it out.
