If we somehow had the ability to acquire the first overall pick in the 2013 draft or the 2014 draft, which would you choose knowing what you know now?
I know little of the top guns in those drafts except for what I've read. On one hand you have Connor Mcdavid who was just granted exceptional status into the CHL, and on the other, Nathan Mackinnon who appears to be the clear front runner in what is considered to be a rather deep draft.
I'd lean towards Mcdavid myself. I somehow feel that he'll have a higher ceiling. And Gary Betteman. Maybe I could get that life-sized bobble head to shake until he chips his teeth.

Reason: qep
I'd pick 2013. Lots of great-sounding 2014 prospects, but it doesn't get much better than getting to choose between Jones and Mackinnon, so I don't see any reason to hold off.
Would you rather go 16 years without NHL hockey if it meant winning a Stanley Cup, or have 16 years of NHL hockey with a below-average team and no Stanley Cup?

That's a loaded question. The way it's worded it sounds like you get both. Will the team never win? Because in the post it sounds like after 16years they will.
Either way, I'll take hockey everyday of the week.

I'd rather have a lifetime of below-average hockey and not a single Stanley Cup.
It's a game, not a job. We don't watch stats and treat them as year end reports. We do it cause it's interesting to us and helps us get through the cold freaking winter.

Which player/draft would you go with?
Not sure what you are reading but Mackinnon is a 50/50 at best for first overall. Seth Jones is the front runner right now. And Mcdavid is not eligible for the 2014 draft, he'll be in 2015.
To answer your question, I would probably go with Jones this year rather than Reinhart in 2014, just because it would suck to be the worst team in the NHL two years from now.

My bad. Thought Mcdavid was eligible for 2014. I actually never heard of this reinhart, but I will look into him further.

Problem is that with Bogo - Buff - Enstrom, our need is not a defenceman. We need forwards. Maybe we can tank for 2nd...
Any of MacKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Barkov or Shinkaruk would work for me. I'd be tempted to take Monahan.
MacKinnon will likely be an offensive dynamo. Monahan will likely be a very solid 200 ft player. I see benefits to either player. If we have the chance to take either, giddy up.
