Red Wings make offer to Carlo Colaiacovo (NYR, CAR, CGY also interested?)
I'm a little hesitant to post this, as I've been burned by Andy Strickland rumors before, but what the hell else are we going to talk about.
Sources confirm talks have progressed between D-man Carlo Colaiacovo and the Detroit Red Wings. Word is he’s received a multi-year offer from Detroit with the New York Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes also expressing some level of interest. He turned down Nashville earlier this summer while the Calgary Flames have indicated they could be interested in if they move Jay Bouwmeester.
All the buzz around the Hurricanes is that their defense is done.
Acquiring another defenseman would imply a trade or waiver. Also, the Hurricanes specifically acquired Joe Corvo in order to add a RHS to balance the lineup, so bringing in Colaiacovo would imply that one of Gleason (NTC), Pitkanen (would have to be a major trade) or Harrison (just re-signed) would be getting traded.
"Some level of interest" is a flexible term and could mean a lot of things, but it's hard to conceive of a situation where the Hurricanes would want to bring in Colaiacovo at this point in time.
I see him as a much better fit in Detroit than NYR, CGY or CAR. This might put pressure on the Blues to finally move on from the Colaiacovo saga and replace him via trade.
I'm pretty sure the blues already moved on from Colaiacovo when they signed Woywitka to a 2 way deal, haha. In all seriousness though, Army already made it known that they are trying to upgrade on an LHD to play with Petro. If Carlo is off the market, it really has no effect on Army's decision making. He's not going to all of a sudden give in to higher demands because Carlo is not an option. He'll either make a trade that offers good value or go with the current group until something presents itself.
Is there no interest from Philly? Thought for sure they'd be looking to sign a UFA defenceman.
At this point I believe that we are going to stay put. Flyers don't want to overspend for lesser talent/injury-prone players. Now if your talent level or production is top-notch, we will give you the world and then some i.e. Weber,Suter. Have enough depth as is lol.
The Wings need someone. Although personally I think they should get an upgrade via trade rather than get a bottom-pairing guy. You never know though, Detroit works for almost everyone. Ian White did wonders upon arriving there, but he was Lidstrom's partner after all.
Anyway, Strickland is usually pretty reliable when it comes to anything Blues-related. Only makes sense he'd know about Colaiacovo.
