Ultimately, as with all players it is going to be up to them to earn minutes. But as others are mentioning, if Feaster and Weisbrod want or think guys like Aliu, Horak and Byron will be right there competiting for spots, then why wouldn't of they left at least one open for them? Yes they can always make a trade, but they just resigned Backlund, Stempniak and Comeau. So if someone like Aliu has a good training camp, its inevitable that 2-3 guys are going to have to be moved by the end of camp.

Stempniak, Babchuk and Karlsson are obvious choices.
Oh 40pts is a stretch and a half. Unless he starts the year in Calgary and out competes Stemniak and Comeau for ice time, there's no way he gets 40 points. I'm hoping for 12 goals 15 assists on some good hot streaks during call-ups, thereby forcing himself for a guaranteed spot next year. He's gritty like Brad Marchand and I really like his game.

I want to see Baertschi, Jones, and Aliu start in Abby this year. Last year we were so injured that Kostopolous was playing on the second line. I want good enough depth that we won't see that again. I can see 200 man games lost again this year. That means Aliu, Baertschi, and Jones could get 66 games each through call ups alone. Although, if they earn the spot they should be given it.

That's too bad. I really like Comeau. At 25 years old he had a 40+ point season. And even though he had (hopefully) an off year, he was still throwing his body around, blocking shots and whatever else. Sure he looked lost during the rush and looked to have rock hard hands, but I think he can return to 20 goals, 20 assists plateau.

I don't think its that bad as the first injure in the top 9 he will be given a the spot not only that but we should need a big body on the second pp unit and I think it will be him.

only positive i see in them 4 battling it out is that its going to make some competition in the line up and at training camp where god knows maybe their will be more then just 1 that loses his spot by the competition within what is already signed and prospect trying to claw themselves in the lineup

I am expecting big things from this team (top 6 in the west)
First let me state my 3 reasons why
1. Hartley likes to play a offensive system and could potentially utilize Stajan and Jbo.
2. Adding a whole season of Cammy the last time Iginla and Cammy had a whole season they put up 169 points and 74 goals.
3. Altho adding Wideman is a big boost to the pp I feel adding Hudler is the 3rd biggest move this offseason as we lost 14 ES with Jokinen and we 6th worst ES team last year but Hudler scored 23 ES goals last year he should be able to bring at least what we lost in Jokinen if not more.

Iginla 35G 45A
Tanguay 20G 55A
Cammy 35G 35A
Hudler 25G 25A
Glencross 22G 25A
Cervenka 15G 25A
Baertschi 15G 25A
Backlund 7G 25A
Comeau 10G 20A
Stempniak 10G 15A(losses his 3rd line spot to Comeau)
Stajan 4G 15A
Aliu 3G 10A
Jones 3G 5A
Jackman 3G 5A
Bouma 2G 3A

Wideman 10G 35A
Gio 8G 25A
Jbo 8G 20A
Brodie 5G 15A
Butler 2G 13A
Sarich 1 10A
Smith 2G 5A
Babchuck(traded)

Total goals: 245
Goals Against: 230

@ Glen, I think that those totals are very realistic. Obviously the biggest areas we differ point in are with Brodie and Jbo. Hopefully were somewhere in the middle.

Just to say that the days of 70 points for Tanguay and Cammaleri are done. Iginla will get 70-75 this year and Both Cammy and Tanguay will get 55-60 maybe more if everything falls in place. And for Cammaleri to have a shot at 70 points but is very unlikely is if Cammy plays 82 games and i just dont see it,he will always miss some games. Sven Sbaertschi will be the MAN in Calgary in 2-3 years at least. And i see him have a good first full season for 45-50 points in 2012-13 and have a shot for the Calder. And there is just no way in hell that Stajan gets on the top line.

Last year Tangs was on pace for 63 points on one of the worst 5v5 teams in the league, he had 69 the season before when they played a more offensive system. Hartley is more offensively minded than Sutter so to say that Tangs couldn't put up 70+ points is kinda wrong.

Tangs is not old, if healthy, he is still very capable of getting 70+ pts. And I actually think Cammy is going to have a very solid season next year. He gave us lots of reason to think so last year.

I agree. Both will be in our top 5 for points. Tangs was our best player to start the season and he's quietly and consistently one of our better top 6 forwards that does a lot of the little things right. Cammy had an off year and will return to his epic form.

The only really stand out issue for this team is our Centers.

We have Stajan, who while he could play on the top line is likely best suited to a 3rd line role. A nice option to have should injuries arise though.

Then Backlund, we pretty much have to hope that he can pick up his game this year and become a top 6 center. I expect him to probably start on the 3rd line, which makes me wonder what will happen with Stajan.

Then we have Cervenka who is a total wild card. Could be a 1st line center, could be a total bust. I think he is likely a 50 point 2nd line Offensive minded C, who can also be used on the wing. I think he will probably start on the 2nd line with Hudler.

Finally, we are able to use Cammy on the top line, although he isn't a real center. He wont win a lot of Faceoffs, but skill wise he should be alright.

I think it will really hinge on how our centers perform whether or not we make the playoffs.

Here are my expectations:

Goalies:

#34 Miikka Kiprusoff: 44 gp, GAA 2.40, SVS% 92,0, 23 W, 16 L, 2 OTW, 3 OTL
#37 Leland Irving: 6gp, GAA 3.00, SVS% 90,6, 2 W, 3 L, 0 OTW, 1 OTL

Defenders:

#4 Jay Bouwmeester 48 gp, 2 + 16 = 18 p (0,38 PPG)
#5 Mark Giordano 48 gp, 6 + 17 = 23 p (0,48 PPG)
#6 Cory Sarich 35 gp, 0 + 4 = 4 p (0,11 PPG)
#7 TJ Brodie 48 gp, 1 + 16 = 17 p (0,35 PPG)
#26 Dennis Wideman 48 gp, 7 + 20 = 27 p (0,56 PPG)
#27 Derek Smith 13 gp, 0 + 3 = 3 p (0,23 PPG)
#44 Chris Butler 48 gp, 1 + 9 = 10 p (0,21 PPG)

Forwards:

#10 Roman Cervenka 48 gp, 13 + 18 = 31 p (0,65 PPG)
#11 Mikael Backlund 48 gp, 6 + 11 = 17 p (0,35 PPG)
#12 Jarome Iginla 48 gp, 20 + 24 = 44 p (0,92 PPG)
#13 Michael Cammalleri 48 gp, 16 + 22 = 38 p (0,80 PPG)
#17 Blake Comeau 44 gp, 4 + 8 = 12 p (0,27 PPG)
#18 Matt Stajan 40 gp, 2 + 10 = 12 p (0,30 PPG)
#19 Blair Jones 33 gp, 2 + 3 = 5 p (0,17 PPG)
#20 Curtis Glencross 48 gp, 17 + 16 = 33 p (0,69 PPG)
#22 Lee Stempniak 45 gp, 9 + 11 = 20 p (0,44 PPG)
#24 Jiri Hudler 48 gp, 11 + 15 = 26 p (0,54 PPG)
#27 Sven Bärtschi 48 gp, 11 + 14 = 25 p (0,52 PPG)
#28 Tim Jackman 26 gp, 1 + 2 = 3 p (0,12 PPG)
#29 Akim Aliu 4 gp, 0 + 1 = 1 p (0,25 PPG)
#40 Alex Tanguay 48 gp, 12 + 26 = 38 p (0,80 PPG)

So these expectations mean that:

- Flames will score 141 goals (goals average 2,94)
- Opponents will score 124 goals (goals average 2,58)
- Flames's record will be 27-18-4 --> 58 points (~99/82G)

I think I was a little optimistic but I believe that this is possible if everything goes well.

Just as a note, Cevenka wont be ready for the opener (had blood issues right now, out for now.)

I don't think its official that he'll miss the opening game. He is able to fly and join training camp. Whether he'll play right out the gate or miss a week or two is up to the team doctors

Yep. And after the lockout ended, I've been optimistic every day so I hope that Roman will be in the season opener.

Irving with 16 starts? Don't see that happening in a 48 game schedule...

I'm predicting Kiprusoff is dealt by the trade deadline and Irving gets almost all of those starts after that trade.

@ CGYPUKSUX, I think your totals are probably very realistic. Although, I think Iggy will continue to be our points leader (albeit by a small margin) and I would be shocked if Brodie only got 12 points in 48 games. He will be around 20+, just my opinion.

It's possible, but I think he's playing behind Wideman, Giordano and Bouwmeester for PP time. That is going to impact his scoring quite a bit. Also, 20+ points would be close to 40 points during a regular season. That would put him in the top 20 defensemen in scoring. Don't see that happening. Not playing behind those three defensemen.

Just to clarify, I posted that before I had heard that he would be flying to camp. At the time, they were saying they didn't think he could fly.
