Hopefully some folks are saying that they liked it better when it represented a Sun Devil.

Is it really that big of a deal? They've altered the logo so that it doesn't look the same as ASU. Many teams around the sports world have based their logos off the marks of other teams.

It's a good looking logo.. better than the "DD" that was in use previously.

Considering you're trying to present yourself as "professional" yet you're ripping off logos, yeah it's a big deal. If it was a big enough deal for Akwesasne to change their logo, it should be for Dayton as well.

Theft is theft and I have a feeling Dayton's logo won't be lasting if Arizona State drags copyright infringement charges up.

Except they're totally different and the W isn't Walgreens' primary logo. And nor is the primary logo for the Nationals. Part of it, but not the sole part of the logo.

Trademark infringement. Totally different kettle of fish.

The Green Bay/Georgia helmet logo isnt even the same thing.

The Packers own the trademark for the G but have granted permission for schools like Georgia and Grambling to use it as has been covered by ESPN

I love how they are using an Akwesasne Warriors player in their graphic...

Actually it's both. A work is copyrighted the moment it's created. So it's protected by both trademark and copyright laws.

And it can be a big deal as Ryan Harrison should know. The IceMen had to change their logo after the first season because the first one was "borrowed."

Do you really think ASU is paying attention to some virtually unknown Single A Hockey league?

No it's not.

If this is theft, that the Toronto Maple Leafs are also thieves for "stealing" the name and basing their logo off of the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team.

It falls on the trademark owner to protect it. Ignoring a ripoff of your logo just because it is "some virtually unknown single A hockey league" means nothing. And, yes, these schools and professional teams either have someone in-house or contracted to protect their trademarks. Also threads like this one and especially at places like Chris Creamers' Sports Logos Community draw attention and make these people's/firm's jobs even easier.

Yes, it is theft. I don't know about Canadian copyright and trademark law, much less what it was in 1917, but under the current copyright and trademark laws in the US (you know, the laws that are actually relevant to this case) this is theft or close to it. It may be ruled that it is different enough to be ok but the fact remains that this is very unprofessional.

Well the devils have changed their banner again...this time going back to the DD.....maybe the heard from someone after all..

although the pitchfork logo as well as the edited version still appear on the news stories...

as a fun note they still have a season ticket graphic that uses the Albany Devils logo

Many teams have based their logo off of other teams' marks in the past. I don't see how this is any different. Those teams haven't gotten the criticism that the Devils are getting either. Not sure why that is.

There's basing your logo off of another mark (drawing inspiration from) and ripping off the other mark.

Your statement is too broad but every recent case I can think of where a logo was ripper off, the offender has been criticized.

The hockey Leafs had the permission of the baseball Leafs, so no.... not really.
