patches is definitely a lock. you should have seen him and ryan play together last WC. pure ****ing magic.
plekanec is not a lock? of course he is! to the many people who have said he isn't, i'd like some explanation behind your collective reasoning...
eller is also a lock because loldenmark
emelin has a really good shot at playing.
diaz is also a lock, weber might be in also...
while price is not a lock, at least technically, he just has to not suck until then to make it in.
subban has some serious competition if he wants to make it in. his impeccable pedigree in international tournament and his play on big ice might give him that nudge he needs but until the olympics, he needs to rock the league big time
Canada should make Luongo their starter, it would even the playing field between the different countries.
Luongo was great for Canada in 2010 and he will most probably be the starter just because of that. Price should be ahead of Fleury and Warc but those guys have represented Canada in the last couple of years and will be competing for a spot, so nothing guaranteed

Price has represented Canada successfully in the past too, wining tournament MVP no less.
If Burke is in charge of the USA team again I doubt any player on the Canadiens makes the team. Gionta should have at least had an invite last time around, but Burke kept up with his typical ********.

Luongo will be an old fart by Olympic time. He surely won't be the starter. Price will make it.
Price/Ward
Fleury/Luongo

Canada - Carey Price, (lock), PK Subban, (outside chance as of now, just have to see how much he improves, camp invite for sure) USA - Max Pacioretty (pretty decent chance), Erik Cole(if he continues to tear it up), Brian Gionta (very outside chance, but they might conclude that they need more veteran leadership on their team), Alex Galchenyuk, (We can only hope he's that good that fast) Russia - Andrei Markov,(lock), Alexei Emelin (outside chance, camp invite for sure) Czech Republic - Tomas Plekanec(lock), Tomas Kaberle..but probabley a lock. Switzerland - Yannick Weber, Raphael Diaz...both locks. Denmark Lars Eller, (lock) Slovakia Peter Budaj (camp invite, if he's still with us.)
Markov is no lock. He has to show his old self first. A lockout wouldn't be helpful there.
How bad do you know Emelin? Emelin is a sure shot lock on that roster.

What about patches?
Just like Brodeur was an old fart but still the starter until they played Luongo ahead of him. Luongo will be the starter IMO simply because of 2010, unless he is injured or something like that
Then it's between Ward, Price and Fleury depending on the next 2 years who plays best

Are you really comparing the best goaltender of all time to Luongo ? Brodeur is still heads and feets above Luongo at 40..

The experiment of having the veteran goaltender on the team due to past tournaments rather than current talent did not work last time. Brodeur was a bust for Team Canada in 2010. Hopefully they learned their lesson. If Luongo plays better than he has in past seasons then he deserves his chance. If not, let Fleury/Ward/Price fight it out for top 2 spots.

Luongo won't be a starter, not even sure if he'll make the team. Since the olympics he struggled and was really inconsistent, and even in 2010 olympics he played just good, not great. Ward isn't elite, so he won't be the starter, and if last season playoffs round against flyers is a sign, fleury isn't that good when there's a lot of pressure. Right now Price is a lock for starter, but it could change (which I doubt).
Sleeper pick: Smith (for 2 or 3 goalie)
Locks:
- Price (starter if he's playing to his potential)
Bubble:
- Subban (anywhere from a top-4 guy to an alternate if he's at his best)
Longshot:
- Gorges (could make it as "the" stay-home/shut-down dman, like Regher was a few years back, IF he continues to improve)
- Desharnais (no chance at all unless he has a "st-louis" style break-out btw now and then, becoming a dominant PPG offensive player with the versatility to play any forward spot)
USA
Locks:
- MaxPac (barring injury or serious regression, he'll push for a top-line role with team USA, versatile enough to play anywhere in their top-12)
Bubble:
- Cole (needs to put together another 30goal season and stay healthy, but if he does I'd put him as a lock to be one of their top-12 forwards)
Longshot:
- Gionta (would need to bounce back with a huge season to get a look, veteran leadership qualitites could earn him that role with a USA squad that is heavy on young talent but a bit thin in "veteran" forward talent)
- Galchenyuk (if he is the "real deal", and gets an NHL spot for 2013, he could force his way into the US lineup, though I won't hold my breath)
Euro Teams
Locks:
- Markov, Russia. (if he's healthy, he'll be a top-pairing dman for Russia)
- Emelin, Russia (some might disagree, but if he continues to progress, or even maintain his late-season level, he's a lock imo for Russia's top-7)
- Plekanec, Czech (injury only way he's not on their squad)
- Kaberle, Czech (even if he continues to decline, he's top-7 for Czechs almost for sure)
- Eller, Denmark (injury the only exception)
- Diaz, Swiss (see above)
- Weber, Swiss (see above)
Bubble:
None
Longshot:
- Budaj, Slovakia (not likely to get enough action to make a case, but Slovaks are thin enough at G that he might just find himself getting the invite as a #3)
- Naatinen, Finland (another highly unlikely, but if he either forces his way into the habs lineup, or heads back to FInland in 2013 and has a great start to the season, he has the size/versatility to at least get consideration for the Finns who aren't particularly deep upfront)

I could probably come up with 2...possibly 3 squads of Canadian forwards before having Desharnais on team Canada discussion! Stop claiming Desharnais as even a long shot...he's a NO shot!
Gomez has more of a chance to make team USA....this is not a knock on Desharnais, its a reflection of the insane depth of canadian forwards....St. Louis was a (top 6) forward on Team Canada after an insane few seasons winning NHL's top awards. Desharnais has not achieved anything even close to St.Louis nor will he in the next 2 years without playing alongside a Lecavalier in his prime. St.Louis was a sure shot as a top 6 in 2010, Desharnais would not be able to achieve This, nor would he be useful on the bottom 6 forwards...So stop being a "Habs hopeful" and be realistic! you insult the Stamkos, Crosby, Nash, EStaal, Perry, Hall, Tavares, Eberle, Heatley, Seguin, etc etc etc etc...
Locks:
Plekanec, Eller(if team qualifies), Diaz and Weber. Price (as a backup)
Close to locks:
Price (as the starter), Pacioretty (Just needs to continue what he does), Kaberle and Markov (if their age isn't a problem + health)
Will get a shot: Subban(canada's defense is so deep), Emelin (still developping but played international games so will get at least a call), Cole ( if he proves that he can continue to score 30)
Longshots: Gally (too early), Desharnais (too deep at center in Canada, but we never know). Gionta ( USA is very deep at wingers, prefer size and already many good defensive forwards in Callahan, Backes, Brown, Parise and Kesler.
lol at Desharnais, even if I believe he can reach 70-80pts eventually

i think this sums up what i would think too. and yeah, those longshots are indeed longshots.
