Steve Yzerman and the Winter Classic

So on the Detroit board there has been some talk about Yzerman's reluctance to participate in events surrounding the Winter Classic (specifically the alumni game). And after Joe Nieuwendyk confirmed his participation it became more and more obvious that there was something other than his duties as a GM holding him back.

I'm sure his bad knee may have effect his decision to play in the game but doesn't explain why he wants to avoid the WC all together.

The idea that keeps coming up is that he doesn't want to send the wrong message the the people in Tampa. Perhaps there's still some tension surrounding his ties to Detroit and he wants to send the message that he is all about the Bolts now?

So my question is, how would Yzerman participating in the Winter Classic and maybe even putting on the Winged Wheel one more time make you feel? And on an even broader note, is there some negativity associated with Yzerman's relationship with the Wings?

It really wouldn't bother me at all if he wanted to take a few days to enjoy himself with his friends. He deserves it, 3-4 days won't make a big difference.

Doesn't matter to me.

I do think there is some negativity felt about SFY's relationship with the Wings. He was with them for so long, that I think there's a fear that they'll steal him back.

Andreychuk is going to play for the leafs, too. I truly doubt anyone here would be hurt if Yzerman played with the Wings for an alumni game.

This.

The jibes from wings fans at the time that we were 'training him up as a GM for them' sort of poke at us Tampa fans fears.

I wouldn't have any problem with it. Actually, I think it would be kind of nifty to see him on the ice again.

I'm not sure that his reluctance to play can all be explained by him not wanting to upset Tampa fans. That may be a part of it, but I read somewhere that he said he hasn't played since his retirement. Not so much as a pickup game with friends. I can't find the link. Maybe he really just doesn't want to play?

Yeah, Andy is going and he's a team employee so who cares?

Like albatross said, maybe he really just doesn't want to play. It's his decision after all.

I have no problem with it either. It would actually be pretty cool to see him play again with the other legends of the game. Even though it's just for fun an alumni game between Toronto and Detroit will be fun to watch.

It could be that he's putting his job as GM first over the game, but I don't think there is any strain in his relationship with Detroit. I know he wishes that games between us end in both teams earning a point. Deep down he'll always remain a Red Wing at heart, and I can respect that.

Not fussed if he went to play. If anything it would be exciting to see him play again.

I think you're right, honestly. I found it odd he jumped so quick to say he wasn't playing.

Hes pretty well loved in Tampa so far, I don't think anyone would be heartbroken over an alumni game.
